The Bigger Commissions 2007, to be launched

The Bigger Picture
exhibits artists' film & video and interactive / participatory
screen based projects on Big Screen Manchester, UK. Utilising this
unique screening space, The Bigger Picture is able to present a host
of artists' works to large and diverse audiences reaching beyond the
traditional gallery context.
Cornerhouse, working in
partnership with BBC and Manchester City Council, delivers The
Bigger Picture's curated programmes, whilst additionally
commissioning and touring large outdoor screen- based programmes.
The Bigger Picture is inviting proposals for the production of
exceptional new public realm works to be launched on Big Screen
Manchester at the time of the Urban Screens Conference Manchester 07
(11&12 October), and to tour to partner city Big Screens and
public sites throughout 2007/8.
Four new works will be
commissioned, each with an attached fee of £5000 (7400 EUR / 9700
USD) based on an agreed budget, of up to £10,000 for production
(14,900 EUR / 19,500 USD).
This is a significant opportunity
for film, video, new media and cross-disciplinary artists to explore
unique new ways of creating and exhibiting work for a public
context.
Each National Commissioning partner will lead on
the production of one new work. Partners are particularly
encouraging proposals of the following nature: - Interactive and
participatory new work - Interdisciplinary new work (combined
arts, performing arts, audiovisual) - Evolving or expanded work
- New media and streaming technology - Film &
Video
Artists previously commissioned by The Bigger Picture
include Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor (desperate optimists),
Kartoon Kings (Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio), plus Paul
Melia, Hilary Jack, The Light Surgeons, Adele Prince and Louise K
Wilson.

Tilt Gallery and Project
Space, Portland Oregon is currently seeking submissions for the
juried exhibition Soft. Artists are invited to submit up to three
images for consideration. The gallery is interested in showcasing
new work that addresses the intellectual or perceptual
interpretation of "soft". Two- and three- dimensional work in all
media is eligible for consideration.
The exhibit will run
from July 5-28, 2007 with an opening reception for the artists
Thursday July 5. Tilt Gallery and Project Space will provide all PR
and marketing services.

PROPOSALS
At The Edge, Gallery 400, Chicago, IL Deadline: March

Propose a new project for the 2007/08 At the
Edge showcase. Four individuals or group collaborations will be
chosen to present projects lasting from one night to two months
(possibly longer for public projects, gallery exhibitions typically
last six weeks) that will be supported by Gallery 400's professional
resources, a sizeable honorarium, and a production budget.
Inquiry, experimentation and ingenuity are the basis of the
At the Edge series. As Chicago's artistic scene continues to be an
expansive, resourceful and energetic creative arena, Gallery 400 at
the University of Illinois at Chicago encourages the most innovative
aspects of that dynamism. We are looking for engaging collaborations
with individuals ready to take a conceptual, political, speculative
or aesthetic risk. Propose a project you might not be able to

City Without Walls (cWOW) is
seeking employees for two permanent part-time positions to direct
exhibitions and programming at our Newark-based
gallery.
cWOW’s exhibition director coordinates our
prestigious year-round schedule of on-site, off-site, and traveling
exhibitions, including managing gallery operations, liaison with
artists and curators, installation, accessibility and
photo-documentation. Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree in
art, arts administration or related field and/or relevant work
experience preferred. Strong organizational skills, an ability to
meet deadlines, and basic computer skills are
essential.
cWOW’s program director coordinates our award-
winning programming, including educational programs such as ArtReach
and Newark New Media. Also manages website content, events, space

NEW MEDIA ART EXPLORING THE CONCEPT OF RURAL AND ARTE DE LAS
AMERICAS
ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art is currently
accepting submissions of new media work best documented with video
for the next two issues-
RURAL: calling all artists exploring
the pastoral all ranges of real and imagined bucolic ideals,
verdant fears, and agrarian desires.
ARTE DE LAS AMERICAS:
seeking pioneering new media work created by artists living in, or
hailing from, South and/or Latin America.
The staff of ASPECT
is asking curators, art critics, and members of the contemporary art
community to help assemble and comment on works for the next issues
by submitting a work of art on which they wish to provide audio
commentary. Due to the format of the publication, the criteria for
selection will include both the qualifications of the commentator
and the quality of the work submitted. Audio recordings of the
commentary will be assembled after the submissions have been
selected.
Submissions should include:
- Video documentation of a work or small group of works by a
single artist
- Resume of the artist
- Contact information for the commentator and artist
- Resume of the commentator
- Brief notes outlining the contents of the proposed commentary
- If you would like us to return your materials, please include
a SASE

Cat’Art is a place where the diversity of the art
expressions is encouraged and where the exchanges between cultures
from all over the world can be developed, so that the art expression
remains a universal language.
There are still opportunities
of residency in spring 2007 at Cat’Art.
Application open to
professional artists only, for temporary stays from 2 weeks to 1
year. Average residency fee: 600 euro (lodging, studio and energy
costs included). Detailed estimation of costs on
request.
Every resident has his/her own independent bedroom
with common cooking facilities. Space for the creation: 9
independent studios from 30 to 200 m²; 3 individual rooms for
writers; a 140 m² room with excellent natural light and good show
conditions to visualize the works; a specialized library with
permanent Internet connection.
The environment is exceptional
(unspoilt nature, mountains, lake, in the south of France). The
region has a rich historical background (Cathar castles, old city of
Carcassonne and above all the cave of Niaux with its original
paintings). Close by cultural centres, like Toulouse, Montpellier,
Barcelona.

iLAB - A Collaborative
Residency Program We are pleased to announce the completion of our
first iLAB residency program- The Language of the Listening Body
with choreographer Hope Mohr and composer/acoustic ecologist
Michelle Nagai. Please take some time to peruse the documentation of
this project at Critical Correspondence. We encourage your input in
this dialogue.
iLAB is a collaborative residency program
between movement based artists and scientists, environmentalists,
urban designers/landscape architects, architects and others that
will integrate creative practice within the different
fields/disciplines.
The goals of iLAB are 1.) to
invigorate and re-imagine relationships between the public and the
urban environment through kinetic experience,
2.) to engage
artists and practitioners across the disciplines of dance, art, and
the ecology of physical interrelationships such that we create and
investigate innovative approaches to science, infrastructure,
urbanisms, and architecture within a performative context. 3.) to
support the development of process in engagement over product such
that process is itself a product for artistic and public action.
For each residency iLAB will provide space in which to work,
a $1,000 honorarium for each artist/collaborator, $300 towards
materials, administrative support including publicity, public
outreach, and consultation and facilitation with other artists,
organizations, and contributors. Residency schedules can be flexible
to accommodate the team's needs but must be two weeks minimum and
one month maximum.
Proposals should include an outline of
the goals and plans for implementation of the collaborative process
envisioned and should include a clear format for engaging the public
in the project. The proposed collaborative projects may include but
are not limited to performances, fieldwork, experiments, exhibits,
installations, workshops, restoration projects or any combinations
there of. Each proposal MUST include some form of public
interactions/engagement with the creative process of the
collaboration.
Proposals will be selected based on the
projects ability to provide a clear collaborative process, its
engagement with the ecology of New York City and it's ability to
engage the public in some way with the creative process of the
collaboration. Emerging artists/collaborators are encouraged to
apply.

ARCUS Project 2007,
Moriya City, Ibaraki, Japan Deadline : March 31, 2007
ARCUS Project is an art project based in Moriya City,
Ibaraki, Japan. ARCUS runs several art programs with a focus on
fostering grounds for international exchange in the arts as well as
in the local community. The artist-in-residence program is the core
of ARCUS Project and we invite and support young contemporary visual
artists to take residency and pursue their artistic activities.
The Project name "ARCUS" is derived from the Latin word
"gate,"and coined in with the words ART x FOCUS. The program was
initiated in 1995 with an aim to become the focus of artistic
activities. In its second decade, ARCUS's vision is to become a
laboratory and an archive for creative and innovative
ideas.
The ARCUS Project Administration Committee would like
to invite qualified young artists who work in experimental and
progressive modes of expression, and could provide the community
with new and invigorating perception on contemporary
issues.
Period of Residency Late August, 2007 through
mid-December, 2007
The studio will be available to artists
for the maximum of 4 months period. Artists are expected to be in
residence for Open Studio (scheduled around mid- November to
mid-December) and present the outcome of their activities during the
residency. The ARCUS Project Administration Committee will determine
the final dates of residency for each artist.
