EXHBITIONS
Suckers and Biters: Love, Lollipops, and the Exquisite
Corpse - Ad Hoc, Williamsburg NYC Submissions deadline: Friday,
Jan. 26th, 2007
OPEN CALL for creative
couples!
exquisite corpse evolved from an old parlor game
in which one of any number of people playing would write a sentence
fragment on a sheet of paper, fold the paper to conceal part of it,
and pass it on to the next player for his contribution. The
Surrealists applied this idea of blind collaboration to images in
the 1920s, drawing unpredictable collective works. The name came
from one early result, "The exquisite corpse will drink the young
wine."
Through the latter half of 2006, we have been
creating our own blind-love twists on this tradition: We do a
male/female couple, switching who starts with what gender each time,
combining text and image to depict something relevant to our most
recent experiences together. We use two pieces of paper divided into
three sections and passed back and forth, so that whoever did the
"head" and "feet" on one will have done the middle on the other. The
pairs posted on this site were exhibited in September 2006 at Stain
Arts Lounge in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
The work garnered
much interest and we have valued the process so much, we've decided
to invite other creative couples (not exclusively visual artists) to
submit works for a group show.
The submissions we gather
will be showcased at AdHoc
in East Williamsburg from February 14th - March 5th, 2007 with a
special opening celebration on February 14th from 6 to 10 p.m. From
this show, we will be choosing works for inclusion in a book we plan
to publish in 2008.

Project
Grizzly: A Tribute - Flux Factory, LIC, NY Deadline: Dec. 15
2006
CALL
TO ARTISTS Opening Saturday, January 20, 2007
Troy
Hurtubise is no ordinary man. He has a vision, a quest to return to
the Rockies where he was attacked by a grizzly bear in his youth. In
1996 director Peter Lynch created a documentary about this ambitious
plan. As we learn through this film, Troy prepares for his grizzly
reunion by building and testing grizzly-proof suits, which combines
high craftsmanship, technology and artistic brilliance. Troy
Hurtubise is nothing less than a Canadian Don Quixote.
Please
join us in exploring, uncovering, and paying tribute to this
extraordinary narrative.
We invite artists from around the
world to create their own response to Troy’s body of work and life
ambition. Artists are asked to take on the age-old theme of
human-versus-nature, the conflicting desire to understand the
natural, to commune with it, while also wanting to control and
perhaps even defeat its cruelest aspects. Just as “Project Grizzly”
addresses one man’s obsession with invincibility it also gives voice
to a dream that is at the heart of the human experience. It may be a
little bit insane, but it is moving nonetheless.
There are
infinite ways to approach a project as complicated and personal as
Troy and his grizzly-proof suit adventure. But we request that you
work within the themes aforementioned. We at Flux Factory feel a
closeness to the film that inspires in us a sense of awe and wonder.
We are looking for artist who will share this kinship who are
interested in creating work that will nuzzle up to the ideas rather
than display critical remove.
That being said, go buck wild!
You can make a video, a map, an object, a text, a dance of glee. We
are open to all mediums. It is advised that you view the film
“Project Grizzly” but it’s not necessary for submitting. While the
film is rare, it has become a cult classic and can be rented in some
stores, is available at Netflix, and is cheap on
Amazon.com.
CONTACT: Please e-mail:
kerry@fluxfactory.org or mail: Flux Factory ATTN: Kerry
Downey 38-38 43rd Street LIC, NY 11101
For those
interested in being a part of this rare treat: Include a brief
project proposal, documentation of prior work, and a CV or résumé.
Those selected will be asked to (if in NYC area) come to
Flux Factory for preliminary meetings. We encourage artists to
collaborate with us on the installation as well as conceptual
framework.
Please check out our website
for information on past
projects.

GRANT

2007
Introduction to the Professional Grant ($15,000)
The
Alexia Foundation offers the professional grant to enable a
photographer to have the financial ability to produce a substantial
picture story that furthers the foundation's goals of promoting
world peace and cultural understanding.
Eligibility Any
photographer may apply for this grant. Proposals that have received
grants or awards exceeding $1,000 in the previous calendar year are
not eligible.
This award is for an individual photographer.
Collaborative applications are not accepted.
Judging
Criteria The Alexia Competition was not created with the single
purpose of rewarding the best picture takers -- this is not a
portfolio competition. The award will go to a photojournalist who
can further cultural understanding and world peace by conceiving and
writing a concise, focused, and meaningful story proposal. There is
no mathematical formula for determining the winners, but the story
proposal is the most important part of the application. They are
read and ranked by the judges before any portfolios are reviewed. If
no judge thinks the proposal is worth considering, the portfolio is
not reviewed.
When evaluating your portfolio, the judges
consider your technical ability, your ability to work with your
subjects and your style. The strongest entries are those that
provide strong story proposals with portfolios that exhibit the
photographic ability to execute a story at a high level.
Application Procedure There is no application form for
this grant. An application shall be composed of the following:
1. A proposal of not more than 750 words for a photo story,
picture essay, or photo- documentary project that explains your idea
for a set of pictures that will promote world peace and cultural
understanding. These may include projects already in progress.
Anything over 750 word will be cut. Judges will only see the first
750 words. • Do not put your name or other identifying
information on your proposal. We judge the applications
anonymously • Only one application per person each year.
2. A summary of the main idea of your project consisting of
no more than 25 words.
3. A resume. Be sure to include your
phone numbers and address. Also include names and phone numbers of
three references on the resume. Do not send letters of
recommendation.
4. Professional grant applicants who are
staff photographers must provide written permission from their
employer granting them a leave of absence of approximately 3 months
over the course of a year to allow time to complete their project.
It is not necessary for this time to be a single block. While all
other application elements will be submitted online, this permission
