GRANTS
The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation
Arts Writers Grant
Deadline : September 18, 2006.
Initiated by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the
Visual Arts and administered by Creative Capital, The
Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts
Writers Grant is a three-year pilot program designed
to support critical writing on contemporary visual art
through project-based grants issued directly to
individual authors. The first program of its type, it
was founded in recognition of both the financially
precarious situation of arts writers and their
indispensable contribution to a vital artistic culture.
Through awards for books, articles, and work in new
and alternative media, The Creative Capital | Andy
Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant aims to honor
and encourage:
- Writing about art that is rigorous, passionate,
eloquent, and precise
- Writing about art in which a keen engagement
with the present is infused with an appreciation of
the historical
- Writing about art that is neither afraid to take a
stand, nor content to deliver authoritative
pronouncements, but seeks rather to pose questions
and generate new possibilities for thinking, seeing,
and making
- Writing about art that is sensitive to both the
importance and difficulty of situating aesthetic
objects within their broader social and political
contexts
- Writing about art that does not dilute or sidestep
complex ideas but renders accessible their meaning
and value
- Writing about art that challenges creatively the
limits of existing conventions, without valorizing
novelty as an end in itself.
Approximately twenty grants will be awarded per
annual cycle, ranging from $3,000–$50,000. Art
historians, artists, critics, curators, journalists, and
practitioners from other fields that engage
contemporary visual art and culture are welcome to
apply.
The Creative Capital | Andy Warhol Foundation Arts
Writers Grant will open for on-line submissions on
August 14, 2006.

PUBLICATION
Cabinet - Artist-designed postage stamps for
Publication
Deadline : December 1, 2006
*NYC-based emerging artists only
Cabinet magazine is currently accepting proposals for
artist-designed postage stamps to be included in a
book coming out in the fall of 2007. Each of the 15
artists included in the book will design a full sheet of
perforated, full-color adhesive stamps (which will, of
course, not be valid for mailing!). Each sheet will
accommodate between 40 and 60 stamps, and the
design of each stamp can be different.
The project is funded through The Greenwall
Foundation’s Oscar M. Ruebhausen Commission. The
Foundation’s arts program focuses on the creation of
new work and emerging artists in the NYC area. In
keeping with the Foundation's guidelines,
approximately half the artists represented in the book
will be emerging artists based in New York City (from
any of the five boroughs). A panel will select the
emerging artists from among proposals responding to
this call. The remaining artists in the book will be
commissioned directly by the panel.
Proposals from NYC-based emerging artists must be
received at the Cabinet office by December 1, 2006,
and should include:
- a statement about your intended project (500
words max).
- 3-4 supporting sketches and images of the
proposed project (in color or b/w).
- 3-4 images from past projects that you’d like the
panel to know about (these need not be related to
the stamp project). Each can have an explanatory
caption, if needed.
- a CV.
Please send all proposals to Cabinet magazine, 55
Washington Street, # 327, Brooklyn, NY 11201. All
material must be printed out. We cannot mail things
back; please do not include any slides or original
materials.
Selected artists will be notified by January 15 and the
finalized projects are due on May 1, 2007. All included
artists will receive an honorarium.

Digital Performance Institute Artist Residency
Program, New York, NY
Gertrude Stein
Repertory Theatre (GSRT)’s mission supports
technological innovation in the performing arts.
Following that focus, GSRT’s
Digital
Performance Institute (DPI) encourages arts
experimentation & the thoughtful use of emerging
technology & media tools. GSRT is performance
oriented, but DPI exists as a think-tank for
experimentation beyond discipline boundaries. To this
end, we are pleased to announce an open call for
applications to the DPI Artist Residency Program,
which will provide artists with free access to
rehearsal & meeting space, equipment, and media
creation facilities. The residency also offers
opportunities for pubic showings and consultation
from other media artists.
Through our artist residency program, DPI aims to
provide a context for working in experimental ways
with new media. The residency program is not
focused on the creation of full productions, but on
experimentation. By providing artists with more time
to develop the media component of their work, we
hope to encourage a greater dialogue about the
intersection of technology and performance. A key
component of the residency program is that artists
share their discoveries with their peers through public
Open Labs and on DigitalPerformance.org.
