COMMISSION
Jerwood Artangel Open, ( UK only )
Deadline : October 6, 2006
The Jerwood Artangel Open - a new £1 million
commissioning initiative - has been set up to tap into
a rich seam of unrealised artistic potential.
The Open offers an unparalleled opportunity for
emerging artists in the UK to share with us ideas for
exceptional projects which need a specific site,
significant resources and a committed production
team, including new opportunities for trainee
producers.
Some of the most exceptional cultural experiences of
the past decade have been located in different sites
and situations around Britain.
You only have to think of Jeremy Deller’s re-
enactment of the Battle of Orgreave in South
Yorkshire, the Petshop Boys’ Battleship Potemkin in
Trafalgar Square, Angus Farquhar’s enchantment of
the Isle of Skye, Rachel Whiteread’s House in East
London or Derek Jarman’s coastal garden in
Dungeness.
These particularly special projects have changed the
way we think and feel about our world and
transformed our expectations as to what - and
where - some of the most compelling work of our time
might be made and experienced.
More information
These are the kinds of bold and challenging visions
which have inspired Jerwood and Artangel to
collaborate on this major initiative. We are convinced
there are many other great ideas out there which
could make a similar impact.

PHOTOGRAPHY FIRST BOOK PRIZE,Durham, NC (
US only)
Deadline : September 12, 2006
The Center for Documentary Studies (CDS) at Duke
University and The Honickman Foundation (THF),
based in Philadelphia, co-sponsor this prestigious
biennial prize for American photographers. The only
prize of its kind, the CDS / Honickman First Book Prize
competition is open to American photographers of
any age who have never published a book-length
work and who use their cameras for creative
exploration, whether it be of places, people, or
communities; of the natural or social world; of beauty
at large or the lack of it; of objective or subjective
realities. The prize will honor work that is visually
compelling, that bears witness, and that has integrity
of purpose.
Renowned photographer and writer Robert Adams was
the prize's inaugural judge. Maria Morris Hambourg,
Curator in Charge of the Department of Photographs
at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, judged the
second biennial competition. The judge for the third
competition (2006) is Robert Frank, one of America's
most important and influential photographers. The
winning photographer receives a grant of $3,000,
publication of a book of photography, and inclusion in
a traveling exhibition. The judge also writes the
introduction for the book, which will be published by
Duke University Press in association with CDS Books
of the Center for Documentary Studies.
American photographers who are pursuing work of
creative or social importance have too few
opportunities for support and recognition. This is
especially true when photographers are engaged in
personal or in-depth projects that do not have direct
commercial appeal. While there are other sources for
grants and fellowships in photography, the chance to
see a body of work in print, as a coherent book-
length work, is rare. Concerned about this problem
and recognizing their shared interests, CDS and THF
came together to create this important book-
publication prize.
The winning photographer will be announced publicly
in January 2007. The book will be published in fall
2007. A traveling exhibition will be curated every third
competition, beginning in 2007.

Contemporary Art, CA

Calling all NEW MEDIA artists:
New media art (also known as media art) is a generic
term used to describe art related to, or created with,

opposition to those deriving from old media arts (i.e.
traditional painting, sculpture, etc.) New Media
concerns are often derived from the
telecommunications, mass media and digital modes of
delivery the artworks involve, with practices ranging
from conceptual to virtual art, performance to
installation. The term is generally applied to
disciplines such as:
* Audio Art
* Cell Phone Art

FELLOWSHIP
Eyebeam Fellowships 2006-07, New York
Deadline : August 14, 2006
Eyebeam is currently calling for Fellowship
applications in all three of our lab environments.
Fellowships will be offered in the R&D OpenLab, the
Production Lab and for the first time, in the Education
Lab. The focus of the Fellowships varies depending
on the tools and skills available and the creative
objectives and philosophy of each Lab.
For all of the Fellowships we are seeking applications
from artists, hackers, designers, engineers and
creative technologists to come to Eyebeam for a year
to undertake new research and develop new work.
The ideal Fellow has experience working with and
making innovative technological art projects and/or
creative technology projects and has a passion for
collaborative development. Fellows will bring this
experience and working approach to their own
independent projects, projects initiated by other
resident artists or Fellows and projects conceived
collaboratively during the Fellowship period.
SUPPORT
The program duration is for 11 months, running from
October to August. Fellows are selected from an
open call. International applicants are welcome to
apply although we do not have the resources to
cover travel and accommodation. We are happy to
work with selected applicants, where required, to
help them to secure funds to cover these expenses.
Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend and health benefits
during their stay. They are able to take on additional
external teaching or consulting work, but there is an
expectation that Fellows will be working at Eyebeam
a minimum of four days a week.
Please read the guidelines for each of the Fellowships
carefully. Each working environment has different
sets of tools and different mentors/trainers for these
tools, so applicants should consider which
environment will best suit their own needs and
experience. However, all artists, technologists and
residents have access across the lab environments
and programs.
SHARING
Working connections at Eyebeam will be fostered
though group critiques, discussions and projects,
within and between the lab environments and
residency programs. Fellows also benefit from
critiques, lectures and workshops by external
practitioners chosen for their relationship to subjects
and projects being worked on in the Labs.
All Fellows are encouraged to share their skills and
knowledge with the larger Eyebeam community by
conducting formal and/or informal workshops with
others in the Labs as well as possible workshops open
to the public.
There are also opportunities to develop work for
performance, events, seminars, exhibition or other
public programming in the Eyebeam galleries (and
beyond) during the term of the fellowship.
Core to our principle at Eyebeam is the brokering of
relationships between artists, hackers, coders,
engineers and other creative technologists and the
contexts we provide. The intention is to foster and
facilitate relationships whereby technologists and
artists can come together to germinate and hothouse
their ideas, develop new processes and create new
works through a period of immersion in a social
context which is rich in technology, expertise and
ideas.
During 2006 we are also establishing research groups
to bring together creative practitioners working at
Eyebeam as well as expert external participants to
develop new research leading to possible public
outcomes including seminars, public discussion and
exhibition.
