Markthalle, VOLTA's new location in
Basel
VOLTA, Basel's acclaimed venue
for contemporary and emerging art, will once again be bringing
together a unique selection of international galleries for
Basel's Art Week. The fair, which is celebrating its 5th
edition, will be taking up residence in an impressive new
location at the historic Markthalle, located just a few steps
away from the SBB, Basel's main railway
station.
VOLTA5 received more than 350 applications
from which the Curatorial Board -- composed of
Adam Budak, curator of Kunsthaus Graz and
co-curator of Manifesta 7; Christoph Doswald,
art critic and curator, Zurich; Tom Morton,
curator, The Hayward, London and co-curator 2008 Busan
Biennale; Jasper Sharp, curator and writer,
Vienna; and Stephanie Smith, curator at Smart
Museum of Art, Chicago -- have selected galleries from 29
countries to participate. The complete exhibitor list can be
found at the end of this release.
The Curatorial Board also selected this
year's limited edition artist, New York-based, Lithuanian
sculptor Zilvinas Kempinas, whose unique
installations often use un-spooled videotape and the wind from
electric fans to conjure transfixing visual conundrums. The
VOLTA5 edition, Light Formation (2009, ed.
20) rather uses light as the formative medium for his visual
play. With an ever-growing international reputation, recipient
of the Calder Prize and Atelier Calder Residency Award 2007,
Kempinas represents the Lithuanian Pavilion
at this year's 53rd Venice Biennale and is
represented by Spencer Brownstone Gallery.
VOLTA5 will also feature a specially commissioned large-scale
kinetic installation, entitled Flux (2009),
which levitates a huge double-loop of tape on a circular fan's
air currents and serves to bookend the artist's presentation
of the static piece, Tube, on display in
Venice.

installation, on view at this upcoming 53rd Venice
Biennial.

Other artists to be exhibited in Venice
this year and exhibiting at VOLTA5 include Alberto
Baraya, for Colombia, represented by Galeria Nara
Roesler, Sâo Paulo; Alexander Ponomarev for
Russia, represented by Barbarian-Art, Zürich/Moscow; and in
the group show, Luiz Braga and Sandra
Gamarra, represented by Galeria Leme, São Paolo, and
Daniel Escobar, represented by Josée
Bienvenu, New York, among others. Also showing at
VOLTA5 and on a trajectory for international acclaim are the
Spanish artist Chus García-Fraile,
represented by ADN Galería, who participated in the 10th
Bienal de La Habana; Belgian artist Joris
Vandemoortele, who recently showed at Verbeke
Foundation; the Moldavian artist Alexander
Tinei, represented by Erika Deak from Budapest, will
be participating at the Prague Biennale; German artist
Katja Eckert, represented by DINA4 Projekte,
Munich, who was recently awarded with the Karl
Schmidt-Rottluff Grant; Marlene Mocquet,
represented by Alain Gutharc Galerie in Paris, who recently
had a solo show at the Musée d'Art Contemporain de Lyon; and
British artist Gerard Hemsworth, represented
by Thomas Rehbein Galerie in Cologne, who will be honored with
a solo show at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum later this
year.
Finally, in keeping with VOLTA's mission to
create an environmentally progressive fair, the organizers
have introduced an innovative concept for visitor admission
that will drastically reduce both overall paper usage and the
fair's carbon footprint: the democratic entrance. This
involves an impartial flat-rate entrance fee of 2 euros and
will be applied to all visitors, including press and VIPs, as
much as non-art-world civilians, who previously paid 10 - 15
euros. A percentage of proceeds from the democratic entry fee
will go towards a designated environmental charity.
"VOLTA's aim has always been linked to
innovation," states Executive Director Amanda
Coulson, "and I really wanted to address the two
issues of environment and equal access. Instead of
producing VIP packages on paper and several criteria of
entrance card - all of which require jet postage and are then
discarded and not recycled - we decided to set a single price
for all visitors who will then receive a memento, designed for
keeping. Of course we will have a VIP and a Press Preview for
invited guests at an earlier time slot but all of them will be
required to equally contribute to the ethics of the
show."
VOLTA was founded in 2005 by dealers
Kavi Gupta (Chicago), Ulrich
Voges (Frankfurt) and Friedrich
Loock (Berlin).
The Preview for invited guests can be
accessed by members of the Press by filling in the
registration form, which will require proof of press
credentials. The form can be found online at
www.voltashow.com, Press
Section.
