Clear the ring for Jeppe Hein! During his
stay as artist in residence at the Atelier Calder in Saché,
France, he developed the CIRCUS HEIN project, with which he
follows up Calder’s own examination of the circus. During his
Paris years (1926-1933) Alexander Calder created his miniature
Cirque Calder – figures and attractions made of sheet metal,
wire and found objects – which he carried around in suitcases
and occasionally set up to perform. The Parisian avant-garde
came flocking to Calder’s studio to see his circus
performance. Today, Calder’s circus in a suitcase is part of
the collection of the Whitney Museum in New York.
Jeppe Hein would like to revive the circus
subject and to give it a contemporary take. Various projects,
which deal with the subjects art and circus and focus on
magic, illusion, sensation, participation and entertainment,
will be realised. The variety and motifs of circus life will
influence the conception of the installations, publications
and architectural elements. CIRCUS HEIN has invited
international fellow artists to provide contributions to wow a
circus audience.
