Cuadro Fine Art Gallery is a
leading international modern and contemporary art gallery
based in the Middle East. Cuadro, the largest multi-gallery
space in the heart of The Dubai International Financial Centre
(DIFC), transcends borders and blurs the lines between
academia and aesthetics through exhibitions and an ongoing
series of lectures and residences in the
arts.
Cuadro’s vision is
to initiate a visual dialogue in international contemporary
art through a local presence in Dubai.
Cuadro is a
painting, a cube or box – our gallery is not limited to any of
these definitions, it looks to step outside the domain of
conventional gallery, without the constraints of focus on art
from a particular medium or stylistic designation. Our
interest is in contemporary art as a genre and we hope to shed
some light on the space through transcending borders and
blurring the lines of academia and aesthetics’ not just on our
walls, but also through our ongoing series of lectures and
residences. Our dialogue goes beyond reputation or provenance
and we will always aspire to exhibit the works of established
and emerging artists, ensuring the voice of both is always
heard.

For
their inaugural exhibition at Cuadro Fine Art, Maslen &
Mehra exhibit a selection of works from the Mirrored
and Native series. Eight large scale advertising
light-boxes are transformed from their previous use on the
London Underground.
Working in a
diverse, imaginative and experimental graphic language, Maslen
& Mehras' collaborative practice engages in dialogues
which compare, contrast and juxtapose the natural and human
world in which we live. They have exhibited extensively
internationally and recently a monograph dedicated to their
work was published with support from the Arts Council Of
England.
‘Lying behind
both the Native images, and the images of the Mirrored series
that are their antonym, lies a longing for an Edenic world
that perhaps never truly existed in fact. I think it is part
of the fascination of these works that they both preach a
certain kind of morality, a morality of respect for nature,
and at the same time question it. You can inhabit these
scenes, but only as a ghost. The problems they pose are
ultimately insoluble – there are no slick solutions to be
found here.’ EDWARD LUCIE-SMITH
