Kobi Assaf, The Replacement 1, 2011 oil on canvas 45 x 52 cm
Kobi Assaf's first solo exhibition, GUESTHOUSE, consists of paintings seeking to disengage from the walls and echo the power present in the courtroom. Curtain, stage, empty seats, a picture, a viewer and actors in rehearsal, all these are taking part in the ceremony of an exhibition, inviting demons into it's space while simultaneously engaged in their expulsion from it. Guest House, a protected space to be found while wandering between foreign places, turns out to be haunted by spirits, insisting to present moments of anxiety and fear, particularly while creating an illusion of twilight overcoming the power of rational thought. The paintings freeze moments when the person "catches" Nature's forces trained to culture, ignoring and challenging feasibility of the divine nature, marking itself as a criminal returning to the ring again and again, convinced that he can not lose anything. Freezing of those defining moments puts a dark mirror to the viewer and examine whether the flight of time can still, somehow, be stopped.
