UNION Teesdale Street Information & News

Current Exhibition

UNION was founded in September 2003 by Jari Lager, Director, inaugurating its activities programme with a major installation by American artist Sam Durant titled Upside Down: Pastoral Scene, previously shown at Los Angeles’ Museum of Contemporary Art.

Since its beginnings, the gallery has been committed to presenting ambitious projects by internationally established and emerging artists such as Jeppe Hein (DK), Bernhard Martin (DE) and Hyungkoo Lee (SK), many of whom were shown in the UK for the first time.

UNION brings together UK and international artists of different generations and working in a variety of media, formal languages and conceptual methods. What these share in common is an attitude to experiment with the whole spectrum of visual forms, reflecting upon ideas from the fields of art history, media theory, politics, literature and overall culture. For instance, the practices of Ruth Blees Luxemburg, Matthew Stone and Eve Sussman develop around their interest in theatre and performance; those of Mike Marshall and Scott McFarland consider video and photography in auto-referential terms but highlight the use of these media in meditative and poetic ways. The painters Bernard Martin, Tobias Lehner and Rose Wylie encompass many abstract registers, bringing together various painting styles that demonstrate their enthusiasm for the painting process.

The programme presents six yearly exhibitions - one group exhibition and five solo shows. The size and nature of the gallery spaces effectively provide museum standards which are ideal for the ambitious exhibition programme devised by UNION, part of which in collaboration with external practitioners such as Milovan Farronato, curator of Galleria Civica di Modena, that curated the celebrated group show Final Cuts in 2003.

The gallery operates across two gallery branches located in London’s South East and in the vibrant East End. The main offices and administration are based at UNION Ewer Street (London SE1), close to the Thames River and Tate Modern. This gallery covers approximately 4,000 square feet, including three large exhibition spaces. Situated under characteristic railway arches, they lend themselves to presenting a wide array of media including large installations and projections. While UNION Ewer Street acts as the main headquarter, the second gallery - UNION Teesdale Street – is dedicated to discovering and supporting young UK and international talents spread over five small-scale exhibitions per year. This second branch opened in Bethnal Green (London E2) in September 2006 and is located in a former warehouse that, between 1998 and 2006, housed the VTO Gallery, also established by Jari Lager. As an independent project space with a rewarding history that attracted significant international reputation, VTO was included for four consecutive years in Basel’s Young Artfair LISTE.

Due to the gallery’s geographic proximity to Tate Modern, UNION has strived to reach out for audiences not only interested in discovering contemporary art but also willing to explore the most innovative forms of artistic expression through discursive and educational approaches. To this purpose, UNION has been organising regular talks in its Teesdale St branch by UK curators such as Tom Morton. As part of these activities, the gallery has also instigated and realised off-site major events in collaboration with UK contemporary art institutions, such as the opera performance Liebeslied by Rut Blees Luxemburg, that took place at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in December 2004.

We are moving to our new offices and gallery in the East End in February 2009.
