The belfry project space.

Update 2008.

Ami Clarke continues to fascilitate ‘the belfry project’ as an off-site project, and in this capacity will continue to propose exhibitions to the Parochial Church Council at St Johns on Bethnal Green.

History.

The Belfry was a non-commercial, artist-run project space in the belfry of St John on Bethnal Green, curated and organised by Ami Clarke and Ananda Pellerin during the year 2007.

The project space was established to exhibit work by artists responding to the belfry's unusual interior, atmosphere, and architectural presence.

The belfry's selection criteria favours work that includes alternative approaches to exhibition, and which engage with the unconventional gallery space.

Of particular interest are proposals that:

    * address the architectural space of the belfry, its past or potential uses
    * respond to/confront/engage with the wider environment, including the church and surrounding structures

There are no pre-determined factors as to who or which kind of artist shall be shown in the belfry. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and solely on the quality of the work submitted as well as its relevance to the gallery's curatorial practice
