M + R presents Sign Series : Shane Bradford

The Sign Series paintings continue Bradford¹s allegorical trip through the moral, social, and environmental landscape of urban living. Following on from 2004/5¹s solo exhibition ARCADE, which toured to several European museums before climaxing at M+R, the Sign Series paintings appropriate the world of commercial advertising, television, billboards, neon signage, and the video screen, to place themselves in direct opposition with the format of the contemporary painted surface.
How do we receive our information these days? Do we look at a billboard differently than a painted canvas? Do we believe in what we see? Why is information always presented in a flat rectangle? How can painting compete in the urban arena?
These dilemma¹s are thrown up in abstract narratives throughout the Sign Series as Bradford attempts to reconcile a profound attraction to materialistic fetishes and a natural suspicion of what they represent.
Shane Bradford has shown his work extensively throughout Europe and the United States and is currently in a 3 person show entitled London Bridges in New York, USA (voltzclarke.com) Bradford is a finalist in this years Celeste Art Prize for painting (celesteartprize.co.uk)
