JAUS
is very pleased to present a two-person exhibition featuring new works which will include an outdoor installation, sculpture, drawing, painting and one big mural by artists Mark Dean Veca and Kiel Johnson.  The idea for this exhibition arrived last year through casual conversation, as both artists expressed interest in creating outdoor projects on the JAUS premises.  Veca wanted to make a large scale mural, as he has done countless times elsewhere, on one of the walls that surrounds the gallery that is visible from the street.  Johnson was interested in creating a temporary installation on the exterior of the gallery itself which would give a cartoonish illusion that the building was catching fire.

Although aware of each other’s work, the two had never met before, and aside from being honored and thrilled that they would both want to do something of this nature at our venue, it seemed the perfect opportunity to have them fill the interior as well as the exterior spaces at JAUS.  Both known for their immediate yet masterful draftsmanship, exhilarating imagery, and exacting use of line, the pairing seemed an ideal fit that would only highlight their contrasting approaches.

Aside from the mural and outdoor installation, Veca will showcase his most recent paintings that reconstruct found images into frameworks for what he calls “unbridled graphic improvisation”. Johnson will be presenting the results of a one month residency at Long Beach Museum of Art which will have culminated immediately preceding the opening of this exhibition.
