CABINET OF CURIOSITIES
THE WHIMSICAL WORLD OF CARLOS

Curated by Meyken Barreto

February 18th – March 24th, 2017
Opening Reception: Saturday, Feb 18th, 6pm - 9 pm

Guttenberg Arts Gallery is pleased to present Cabinet of Curiosities, a solo exhibition by Carlos DeMedeiros. DeMedeiros is a self-taught artist, who works exclusively with found and discarded objects, reassembling and turning them into singular creatures, scenes or artifacts.

Cabinet of Curiosities is just a sneak peek into the variety of elements and ideas that are part of the creative universe of this artist, who has developed a whimsical, unprejudiced and expressive poetic language. DeMedeiros understands art as an integral part of life, as therapy, as an entertainment and as a form of communication. Regarding his work the artist has stated:

“All of my pieces are reflections of my experiences I truly believe that Art is a tonic for the human spirit.“

In his working place everything is possible: a light bulb could turn into a candle and a chick at the same time, a broken doll into a political statement, a hammer into a bird or a piece of wood into an odd crucifix. Entering his studio is a way to get into the fabulous, unique and extremely creative thinking of DeMedeiros. That is why this exhibition aims to recreate the environment of the artist studio, highlighting the sensitivity and singularity of his aesthetic proposal.

Carlos DeMedeiros is Brazilian-born and former Monastic scholar. He lives in New Jersey and works at the Sun Union Mill Lofts in Union City. He has participated in exhibitions at the New York Public Library, Art Students League of New York, the Bakehouse Art Complex in Miami, Bluffton University’s Grace Albrecht Gallery in Ohio, and the Outsider Art Fair in New York among others.

Cabinet of Curiosities is part of a new Exhibition Program organized by Guttenberg Arts and curated by Meyken Barreto and Elvis Fuentes that focuses on artists living and/or working in the New Jersey area. This new series of exhibitions will take place in two locations: the Guttenberg Arts Gallery in Guttenberg and the Lake House at James J. Braddock Park in North Bergen.
