Chisum Pierce - Artist Statement

The Rake of Taste, a poem of 1735, Anonymous

“If fond of knowledge
Seek it in town, and quit the ruddy college.
Here, the soft sex, here the enlivening bottle,
Will teach you more than can old Aristotle.”

I am an artist working with concept, although, photography, video, the internet, performance, and sculpture dominate my work, the idea is what is important to me, not defining or choosing a particular medium to label myself. My work deals with a disease that most of us, myself included, suffer from, an addiction to celebrity culture and the aspiration to be rich, better looking, and like the famous sometimes-despicable people in the media. To convey this I have created a character named Cain Nevaeh, who is akin to Tomas Rakewell in Hogarth’s A Rake’s Progress, Hermes of the Ancient Greeks, or the coyote in Native American culture. All of these characters, including Cain, are “tricksters” meant to wander the earth and teach the society they are aimed at lessons about themselves. The lesson for my audience is to question those we worship and ask the question why? Cain is an example of the male fantasy figure; he is rich, famous, can have any woman/man he wants, takes drugs, consumes massive amounts of alcohol, and suffers no consequences. I have empowered Cain with all the vices that are glamorous to us, and I put him in the world to be the “Rake” of today’s American obsession with fame. Two theories are instrumental in my study of fame that of Melanie Klein, a student of Freud, who talks about a “good breast” and “bad breast relationship, and that of Marxism, which speaks of commodities entering the market. When Kleinian Theory is mixed with Marxism it equals a vicious cycle creating a money making machine and a society full of little boys and girls who will never be rich or pretty enough.
