Brutto Gusto is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Guido Geelen in Berlin
In the world of ceramics, Guido Geelen (Thorn NL, 1961) is an important pioneer who constantly extends the boundaries of the craft. With his brutal and unorthodox sculptures he has brought an innovative impulse to a traditional material: clay.
His works are contradictory and challenging, but also playful and attractive. They embody a daring opposition between caustic obstinacy and delightful seduction. With great feeling for irony, he transforms a cow’s skull of fired red clay into a strange vase. A life-size cast of a man, hewn into rough pieces as if through an attack, is almost serenely embellished with spring flowers.
Filled rubbish sacks casted in red clay, perforated with glass pipes which function as vases for flowers, celebrate decay as contemporary archaeology.
