‘Long established medium’s harmonize with new media’ curated by Lloyd Gill
The title of this group exhibition is ‘long established mediums harmonize with new media’ and the Lloyd Gill Gallery has gathered eight participating Artists. This group exhibition has investigated into the divisions of Contemporary Art, by showing an exhibition that elevates new media with older techniques. The gallery has selected Artists that work in Sculpture, Painting, Printmaking, with Artists working in Video and Photography.
Clare Carter, who has recently finished a residency in Norway this year, is showing three paintings from a series of work produced from another residency in Cyprus last year. Her work epitomises distinct narratives through transforming everyday scenes of gesture and rural landscape to slowdown human characteristics. Clare has received numerous awards including a Scholarship from Sandnes Kommune for 10 week residency at Stasjon K Studios, Sandnes, Norway in 2008. In 2007, Clare was awarded a Leonard Da Vinci grant (Grampus Heritage Fund) for 3 month residency at Cyprus College of Art, Pafos, Cyprus. The Arts Council England supplied Clare with a grant for a 3 month residency at Upernavik Museum, Upernavik, Greenland in 2006. Clare studied for a BA in Fine Art (hons) at Batley School of Art & Design (UK) and continued her studies at the Cyprus College of Art for a Post-Graduate Diploma Fine Art and a ASET Exhibition Organisation during 2006.
Ross Marklew’s paintings made a sudden transition from representation to abstraction after an experimental period while studying in Cardiff for a BA (hons). His work ‘view of Newport Road’ is a mystical interpretation with loss of perspective to enhance the dreamscape quality. Ross graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 – 2006, (First Class)
Edward Ashton creates multiple depictions using collage which evolve into finalised paintings. Material is collected from a number of sources including old postcards. The images tend to be of a non-personal nature, and have predominantly focused on landscape and architecture. The landscapes tend to be dramatic, inspired by romantic paintings, while the buildings are often monumental. Edward graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 – 2006, (First Class)
Kate Bassett is a printmaker based in Cardiff. Kate is a dedicated printmaker working primarily in the intaglio processes of collagraph and drypoint. These techniques require physicality and demand a ‘hands on’ approach which I respond well to. Kate develop ideas for her work by studying drawings and photographs of streets and communal gatherings. The work is often melancholy yet humorous. Kate feels this is reinforced by my drawing style which gives a theatrical and dramatic sense of space. Kate graduated with a BA in Fine Art (hons) at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, 2003 – 2006,(First Class).
Tim Skinner will be showing a number of video’s which explore his fascination of understanding sound as a visual format. Each video inhabits the movements of sound, which corresponds as a visual representation our perception recognises, such as the film ‘Butterfly’. Tim will be showing a number of prints along side his video work. Tim graduated in 2003 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art at Colchester School of Art and Design. He later received a Graduate scholarship award in 2003-2004 at the Cuckoo Farm Studios, Colchester.
Jonathan Moss works in video, painting and printmaking. Elements of nineteenth century European northern romantic landscape painting are important to Jonathan for example, a search for God in nature and adopting light and darkness as metaphors, whilst he simultaneously takes inspiration from modernism, especially the Abstract Expressionists acknowledging the painting as a thing in itself, the importance of the act of making and exploring the tension between abstraction and figuration. Jonathan will be showing videos that are in conjunction to paintings and prints which contribute to the series ‘Rivesaltes (Shoah)’. Jonathan has currently completed his studies at the Royal College of Art, London. PEP, Department of Printmaking in 2006. He studied for a PGCE at Oxford University during 1995–1996 and completed a MA in Fine Art and Art History at The University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK during 1991 – 1993.
Ian Penna works in Sculpture and the selected work for this exhibition transpires the use of correlating materials to collect into a state of formulating matter. He combines his skills of preparation, investigation, manipulation and the application of the materials in space. Ian graduated from Falmouth University with a BA in Fine Art (hons) and was one of the four finalists for the 2007 Midas Award, Artonomy Fine Art, Truro. Ian is a member of the N.S.A ( Newlyn Society of Artists).
Manuel Capurso is showing a selection of Photography from the series of work ‘beyond the darkness’, which was generated while studying at the London College of Communication. The work in this series embodies a elusional state of perception, through the use of targeted light thwarted into darkened social arenas. Manuel graduated with an MA Photography, with distinction from the London College of Communication in 2007. He completed a Graduate Certificate in Digital Lens Based Image making from the London College of Communication, London in 2006. Manuel studied for a Masters degree in Labour Science, Statale University, Milan, Italy - Universidad de Granada, Spain in 2000. He has also completed a first degree in Political Science, specialisation in International – Politics Statale University, Milan, Italy during 1997/98. Manuel has been selected for the Photo Espana, Descubrimientos 2008 – finalist and also the Student discovery award – selection 100 finalists in 2007.
