Anne Deleporte, Michel de Broin, Tamar Halpern, Jennie C. Jones, Adam E. Mendelsohn, JJ PEET and Jenny Perlin
February 17 - March 22, 2009 Opening reception: Tuesday, February 17, 6 – 8pm
The opening of This-Has-Been, a group exhibition, coincides with the end of analog TV broadcasting on February 17, 2009. The works in the show are focused on the concept of analog, both in terms of employed technologies, and more abstractly as the concept of a continuous relay of information. Just as analog TV broadcasting will be disrupted on February 17th, works in the exhibition will also deal with the disruption and misinterpretation of transmitted information. The resulting tension between the physical world and the image world is evident throughout the show.
Though the artists are using analog technologies and approaches to creating their work, they are undeniably influenced by the advent of the digital age. Analog photography used to suggest a morose return to the past, or as Roland Barthes suggested, conveyed the message “This has been” and will be no longer. However, our era has a renewed and less nostalgic relationship to the reproduced image, influenced by the analogico-digital image, which disrupts the perceived continuity of the analog. Today, the actuality of all images, including analog, is questioned. Likewise, the actuality of broadcast television, radio and news is also uncertain.
