New York, New York–May 2007–Humble Arts Foundation and Gitana Rosa Gallery are pleased to present "In the Dirt: Young Photographers Rethinking The Human Relationship to the Contemporary Landscape,” featuring six emerging photographers whose work references various traditions in landscape photography. The show evokes Ansel Adams' allegorical representations of manifest destiny in the early-to-mid twentieth century as well as the New Topographics’(Stephen Shore, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher) commentary on post-industrial sprawl through the late 1970s, conjoining these two styles for a contemporary exploration of human interaction with the natural world. From Christian Siekmeier's investigation of German masculinity and hunting ritual, to Reka Reissinger's humorous yet poignant images of cut-out self-portraits on sweeping traditional landscapes, to Jason Lazarus' surreal and often apocalyptic narratives, “In the Dirt…” manages to avoid grand political gestures, serving instead as a vehicle for personal investigation into environment and public space.
Exhibiting photographers include Jason Lazarus, Reka Reisinger, Stephanie Diamond, Rachel Sussman, Angela Smith and Christian Siekmeier.
