Saturday: November 22 2008, 7-10pm Ad Memoriam - an exhibition organized by Joel Gibb
With great joy Exile presents its second residency project by composer, singer and artist Joel Gibb. Specifically timed for the month preoccupied with the birth of Christ, Ad memoriam looks ahead and acknowledge our inevitable death and decay. The project brings together the works of the Canadian artists Joel Gibb and GB Jones, as well as the French-born artists and Berlin residents Christophe Chemin and Gwenael Rattke. All of their works, some of them made specifically for this project, reference what is likely our greatest obsession and fear: the passage from living individual to decaying corpse. From the ancient past to our strange contemporary world of serial killers and fanaticism, mankind has created altars and monuments, performed rites and rituals surrounding death. Working in distinctly different media, ranging from Jones’s lush graphite pencil drawings and Rattke’s magazine collages to Chemin’s bubble-gum crucifixion scenes and Gibb’s black felt wall tableaus, the artists dissect and contribute to this cult of death. Ad memoriam transform Exile’s project space into a pop-depressive chapel devoted to the rituals, processions and glorifications of all of our inevitable departures.
Continuing on the third floor: Al Baltrop - Pier Photographs 1975-1986
During the second month of the exhibition Exile intensifies the contrast between architectural destruction and Baltrop’s intimate portraits taken on the piers. The new hanging shows a selection of previously unseen images as well some of the photographs of the first hanging.
Al Baltrop was born in the Bronx in 1948 and passed away in 2004. From 1975 to 1986 he photographed the crumbling piers and their inhabitants on the west side of Manhattan. He photographed obsessively and created an incredible archive of thousands of photographs that show a captivating mélange of intimacy, decay, violence, creativity and anarchy. Without ever being nostalgic Baltrop’s photographs portray the end of a legendary era: the architectural destruction of the piers and, even more, the emotional and physical destruction through the impact of the AIDS crisis. His photographs though are so much more than historical documents. His passion and personality is visible in the prints. Each of his photographs offers a well-constructed, intimate, and moving glimpse into this fascinating time and place.
During his lifetime, there was little artistic appreciation of his photography and only in recent years has his work slowly emerged to greater awareness. In February 2008 Artforum Magazine devoted its cover and a comprehensive visual essay to his work accompanied by a text by respected art-critic Douglas Crimp. His work is also currently on view at the Fotomuseum Winterthur as part of the exhibition Darkside, together with artists such as Bill Jacobson, Nan Goldin, Man Ray amongst others. Exile is extremely honored to present the very first solo-show of Al Baltrop’s work in Europe. Al Baltrop – Pier Photographs 1975-1986 presents a monthly changing display of rare vintage and modern prints. Modern editions of each photograph, printed by the estate of Baltrop, are available for sale.

Mit Ad Memoriam präsentiert Exile eine Ausstellung konzipiert von Musiker, Sänger und Künstler Joel Gibb. Während der Monat Dezember sich sonst eher mit dem freudigen Thema Geburt auseinandersetzt, blickt diese Ausstellung voraus auf den unausweichlichen Tod und Verfall. Ad Memoriam zeigt die Arbeiten der kanadischen Künstler GB Jones und Joel Gibb, zusammen mit Arbeiten der in Berlin lebenden französischen Künstler Christophe Chemin und Gwenael Rattke. Gemeinsam habe diese Arbeiten eine Auseinandersetzung mit einer der wohl grössten Obsessionen der Menschheit: dem unausweichlichen Übergang von lebendem Körper zu toter Biomasse.
Von frühzeitlichen Anfängen bis zur zeitgenössischen Problematik von Serial Killers und Fanatismus hat die Menschheit versucht, sich mit dem Tod durch Altäre, Monumente und Rituale verschiedenster Art auseinanderzusetzen. Die sehr unterschiedlichen Arbeiten der Künstler, von GB Jones Zeichnungen und Rattkes Kollagen zu Chemins Kaugummi Kreuzigungen und Gibbs Filz Tableaus, setzen sich auf ihre Art und Weise mit dem Thema Tod und Totenkult auseinander. Ad Memoriam wird den Ausstellungsraum in eine pop-depressive Kapelle transformieren, welche sich in aller Passion den Ritualen, Prozessionen und Glorifikationen unseres unausweichlichen Endes widmet.
Weiterhin im dritten Stock: Al Baltrop - Pier Photographs 1975-1986
Im zweiten Monat der Ausstellung intensiviert Exile den Kontrast zwischen architektonischem Verfall der Piers von Manhattan und Baltrops sehr persönlichen Porträts. Die neue Hängung zeigt einige bisher noch nicht ausgestellte Fotografien zusammen mit Arbeiten aus der ersten Hängung.
Für mehr als zehn Jahre hat Al Baltrop (1948-2004) die verfallenen Hafenanlagen und deren Benutzer auf der Westseite von Manhattan fast manisch fotografiert. Er war ein aktiver Teilnehmer der dortigen Szene und hielt diese in tausenden von bislang meist unveröffentlichten Fotografien fest. Seine Bilder zeigen eine fast unglaubliche Mischung aus Intimität, Verfall, Gewalt, Kreativität und Anarchie. Ohne jemals nostalgisch zu wirken, porträtieren Baltrops Bilder das Ende einer legendären Zeit. Sie zeigen nicht nur den architektonischen Verfall in der Stadt, sondern umso mehr verweisen sie auf die drohende emotionale und menschliche Zerstörung durch die sich immer weiter ausbreitende AIDS Epedemie. Doch sind Baltrops Bilder mehr als nur zeithistorische Dokumente. Seine fotografische Passion und Persönlichkeit sind sofort erkennbar. Seine Bilder erlauben uns einen Einblick in diese faszinierende und oft mythologisierte Zeit.
Zu Lebzeiten gab es sehr wenig Interesse an Baltrops Bildern. Im Februar 2008 widmete das Kunstmagazin Artforum Baltrops Fotografie die Titelseite, begleitet von einem Bilderessay und Text des Kunstkritikers Douglas Crimp. Zur Zeit sind seine Fotografien in der Ausstellung Darkside im Fotomuseum Wintherthur zusammen mit Künstlern wie Nan Goldin, Robert Maplethorpe uns Man Ray zu sehen.
Exile is sehr stolz Al Baltrop erstmals in einer Solo Ausstellung in Europa zu präsentieren. In den drei Ausstellungsmonaten werden wechselnde moderne und sehr seltene von Baltrop selbst entwickelte Fotografien gezeigt. Eine moderne Edition produziert durch den Alvin Baltrop Trust in New York ist käuflich zu erwerben.
