Breck Omar Brunson (detail )Uncover: Church, shaved album covers, 37" x 37", 2011
November 12 - December 22, 2011 Opening Reception: Saturday, November 12, 6:30 - 8:30 pm
Curator's Office is pleased to present an exhibition of work by Breck Omar Brunson, an artist, musician, and designer based in New York and Philadelphia.
The exhibition Churchin' was inspired by the artist's self-avowed lack of participation in the religion that he was raised in, a local combination of Catholic and black Southern Baptist traditions. In this show, he revisits memories of the the imagery, icons, numeric relationships, and architecture of his weekly immersions at church. A formative influence is the artist's mother, who is a spiritual advisor, and, in Brunson's words, "has always given the 'Glory to God' as long as I can recall."
The exhibition includes collage, sculpture, video, and sound. Using found material and a raw, urban and quirky aesthetic, Brunson peels away the artifacts of the everyday world to find the mystery that fuels his artistic practice. He says, "Christianity has always saturated my ways whether i have been a true believer, or a brief believer, or a non believer. Much of my personal discipline comes from a desire to find something more in life than my physical surroundings. As I have grown older and inquired about other spiritual practices of those that seek invisible Love and Guidance, I have realized that the belief in something greater than oneself is enough to fuel one's existence."
He summarizes: "Churchin' is an abstract view of an abstract understanding of an invisible proposition made physical. The material choices are local choices. I I feel the world is already talking to me and I only need to respect the puzzle before me."
Known also as a musician and lead singer with The Apes (now defunct) and The Screens, Breck Omar Brunson has exhibited his work at The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC; Vogt Gallery, New York, NY; Civilian Art Projects, Washington, DC; The Joanna, Houston, TX; New Wilmington Art Association, Wilmington, DC; Meat Market, Washington, DC; Columbia University, New York, NY; The Creative Alliance, Baltimore, MD; Transformer Gallery, Washington, DC; Salon Diaz Gallery, San Antonio, TX among other venues. He has also presented his work at Scope Miami, Scope New York, NEXT Chicago, Aqua Art Miami, and the ArtDC art fairs.
