OPENING: Saturday, July 27, 2013, 5:00 – 8:00 pm

Corbett vs. Dempsey is pleased to announce Left / Right, an exhibition of new works by Peter Brötzmann. In his third solo show at Corbett vs. Dempsey, the German artist and musician presents a group of drawings made with both hands, as well as box assemblages made since 2011. The ambidextrous drawings—landscapes, still lives, portraits of one hand composed by the other – are often executed with both hands simultaneously, the mirror image including a text description, also going opposite directions. Delicate, intimate works, they possess a palpable vulnerability, recalling the methods of Dieter Roth and the simplicity of Emil Nolde. Brötzmann has been constructing box works since the 1960s; the most recent ones have a renewed power and unusually vivid colors, perhaps suggesting a more optimistic outlook, or at least a sunny moment. Wood, metal, fabric—basic materials assembled into wondrous miniature worlds.

Brötzmann's work is currently the subject of a major survey at the International Center of Graphic Arts in Ljubljana, Slovenia. A full-color, 48-page catalog, with an essay by Jim Dempsey, accompanies the exhibition.

In the West Wing, Corbett vs. Dempsey presents Like It Is: Paris Portraits, new paintings by Hedwig Eberle. An exceptional young painter based in Germany and France, she is currently the recipient of the Cité international des arts Award in Paris. Eberle holds a degree from the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and is a 2001 graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she received a Fulbright scholarship. Her work relates to some of Chicago’s existential figurative painters of the 1950s, but with a distinctively contemporary visage. Daringly painted with subtle and counter-intuitive color strategies, Eberle's small heads are at once brutal and beautiful. An opening reception will be held at Corbett vs. Dempsey on Saturday, July 27th, from 5:00 – 8:00pm.
