COMPLETELY AUTOMATED PUBLIC TURING TEST TO TELL COMPUTERS AND HUMANS APART

July 04, 2015 , 7 pm
exhibition until September 05, 2015

A catalogue is available.

The third solo show by Flo Maak at the gallery is entitled COMPLETELY AUTOMATED PUBLIC TURING TEST TO TELL COMPUTERS AND HUMANS APART.

The show brings together pieces in which bodies relate to one another both in front of and in the image or behind the screen. Automatic authentication processes interface between them.

A series of portraits (2015) presents people standing in front of color gradients. They have turned their backs to us, have their eyes closed or are staring at some outside world. The images are presented in a 16x9 widescreen format typical of today’s cell phone and TV screens.

Engraved into the glass of the frames are texts and graphic elements, both culled from online tests used to verify users. For example the question: “What is the first name of the first person you kissed?” This is a security question, the answer to which only the actual user of the profile should know. In Maak’s works such questions and the related text elements and graphics highlight the glass as the otherwise transparent level between image and viewer, emphasizing the photograph as a real object in space.

“Bodies That Matter” (2015) is a group of sculptures that likewise asserts its presence in the space. The sculptures consist of barbell discs of different sizes – they serve as counterweights for images of themselves that are printed on transparent acrylic glass. These volumes with their weight are reminiscent of people standing around who, depending on the angle, seem either bored or satisfied that they are at long last united with their images.

Flo Maak (born in 1980 in Fulda), studied at Frankfurt’s Städelschule under Wolfgang Tillmans and was in Willem de Rooij’s master class; he also studied Visual Arts at the Cooper Union, New York City, and Art History, Philosophy and Sociology at Frankfurt’s Goethe University. Maak has been Professor of Fine Art Photography at Chung-Ang University, Seoul, South Korea, since 2013.

Flo Maak has hitherto exhibited in numerous group and solo shows and his works are included in renowned private and public collections.
