The West Wing presents X is not the same as X Bishop & Reis: Cameron Bishop and Simon Reis 12.12.10 - 08.01.11 Opening Sunday December 12, 3pm
X is not the same as X is an installation that considers post structural perspectives on identity and inside/outside power relations. It enacts a folding of the outside into the inside, and vice versa. Bishop & Reis entrap the viewer in a 2/3 size room – a slightly distorted replica of a space through which the viewer has recently passed. Inside this shaky interior, behind our own reflection, the viewer devolves into something else, an everyman who in The West Wing is presented as both one and many Santa. To warp a well-known phrase: the white hair follicles of the long beard marks a deterritorialisation of the fur, mouth and snout of the animal.
Opening Hours: Friday 17 December: 12-8pm Saturday 18 December: 12-5pm Sunday 19 December: 12-5pm Friday 24 December: 12-6pm Thursday 30 December: 12-5pm Saturday 1 January: 1-5pm Friday 7 January: 12-8pm Saturday 8 January: 12-5pm Location: The West Wing is located on the second level of Melbourne Central, opposite Gloria Jean’s Coffee and adjacent to the ‘hanging garden’.
The West Wing presents Picture Yourself Olivia Pintos-Lopez 12.12.10 - 24.12.10 Opening Sunday December 12, 3pm
Analog photo booths are a quintessential, yet vanishing, part of the mall experience. Closing the curtain of a photo booth creates a private space for self-reflection and self-representation in the transitory areas of commercial spaces. For Picture Yourself, Olivia Pintos-Lopez will use the photo booth on the floor above The West Wing to photograph participants and record a three-minute aural portrait as the images develop. The strip of photos will be exhibited as a singular superimposed image. The sound portraits will be presented as anonymous stories that the viewer can listen in on, disconnected from a particular portrait. The resulting portraits will be exhibited in The West Wing and will be added to over the two weeks as more portraits of mall visitors are collected. If you would like to participate in Picture Yourself come on either Wednesday the 1st or Wednesday the 8th of December from 10am to 2pm and take a self-portrait in the photo booth and record your anonymous aural portrait while the film develops. The photo booth is situated on the 3rd floor of Melbourne Central at the top of the food court escalators on the corner of Swanston and Latrobe. If you can't make it during these recording times you can take your own photo strip and leave it at West Wing to be reconfigured for the exhibition. All photo booth portraits and the later Picture Yourself image will be yours to keep.
