The Townhouse Gallery will be hosting the exhibition Knowledge is Sweeter Than Honey of the renowned contemporary artist Susan Hefuna.
Susan Hefuna (*1962) is an artist who works with images in media, photography, ink drawings and installations. Hefuna's work reflects her personal experience of both lives in two cultures, as well as dealing with cross-cultural codes.
Knowledge is Sweeter Than Honey is Hefuna's latest project, consisting of three separate installations that reflect different aspects of her work. The first of the aspects comprises a collection of 15 large wooden Mashrabiya screens, which will be exhibited in the Factory Space. Inscripted on the Mashrabiyas are writings expressing wisdoms and beliefs, such as "Knowledge is Sweeter than Honey". Susan Hefuna’s Vitrines of Afaf is an object installation displaying every day intimate objects belonging to the sisters, mothers or wives of the lane workers, exhibited in the format of the traditional “vitrines” that can be seen all over Cairo. The “vitrines” collect and reveal the dreams and fantasies of all these "unnamed", "unknown" women and will be exhibited on the street in front of Townhouse. In the first floor of the Townhouse a variety of objects and drawings will be exhibited, reflecting her multi-cultural personal experience between Egypt and Germany.
In addition to the exhibition there will be a small artist-book with an interview, held with Susan Hefuna by the internationally well known curator Hans Ulrich Obrist about her work.
Hans Ulrich Obrist will be in Egypt on December 24 for the "Interview Marathon", in which the curator will interview several artists at TheTownhouse Gallery.
