Announcing White House Redux: The Book

Results of the White House Redux competition will be announced on Tuesday 23 September, and the exhibition opening and prizegiving will take place at Storefront on Thursday 2 October at 7pm.

In the meantime, we are pleased to announce White House Redux: The Book.

Published to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of the competition's results at Storefront, White House Redux - The Book contains a compendium of documentation related to the competition and an overview of the results. It includes texts by Joseph Grima (Storefront) and Geoff Manaugh (BLDGBLOG), a history of the existing White House and 123 selected projects as well as the four winning submissions. A jury assessed the submissions in the spectacular setting of the 45th floor of the World Trade Center Tower 7, a process documented in the book's 30-page photoessay by Marty Hyers.

The book is available for pre-order for $39 USD and will ship on October 2, 2008, to coincide with the prizegiving and opening of White House Redux at Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York.

White House Redux - The Book is available in a limited edition of 500 copies.

THURSDAY 2 OCTOBER 7PM
UNVEILING OF THE RENOVATED FACADE & WHITE HOUSE REDUX OPENING RECEPTION

Designed in 1993 as a collaboration between artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl, the facade of Storefront for Art and Architecture is a contemporary landmark in New York City. Originally built with an expected lifespan of just 24 month, the facade had in recent years seen a rapid deterioration in its condition.

Between July and October 2008, extensive restoration work was carried out on the damaged facade. This renovation project, carried out by IBEX Construction, will considerably extend the facade's lifespan. Storefront for Art and Architecture acknowledges the remarkable generosity of all the companies, foundations and private donors who contributed funds and services to make this restoration possible:

WHITE HOUSE REDUX: THE EXHIBITION

In January 2008, during the run-up to the election of the 44th President of the United States, Storefront for Art and Architecture and Control Group sent out an open call for ideas: What would the White House, the ultimate architectural embodiment of power, look like if it were to be designed today?

Over 850 participants from 42 countries around the world signed up to participate, and almost 500 proposals were received. Some are visionary, others polemical; some tap into themes related to current electoral politics, others into the remarkable potential of the building's iconic status. All are investigations of architecture's opportunities and obligations in relation to political power.

On October 2 at 7pm, Storefront will inaugurate an exhibition presenting 150 ideas and proposals submitted for White House Redux. At 7.30pm, awards will be presented to the authors of the best projects as selected by a distinguished panel of judges.
