ANNA CAMNER The Triumph of Time May 6 - June 12, 2010
Stellan Holm Gallery proudly presents an exhibition of new works by Swedish painter Anna Camner, entitled The Triumph of Time. The exhibition will open on Thursday, May 6 and will run through Saturday, June 12, 2010. An opening reception for the artist will be held on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm. This will be Anna Camner's first solo exhibition at Stellan Holm Gallery.
The Triumph of Time will feature a series of eleven elegant small-scale oil paintings on board. These detailed works, bordering on obsessive, depict miniature landscapes occupied by the tiniest of flora and fauna. The works present a glimpse into an imagined rendition of nature where lilliputian dramas unfold within dark and gloomy terrain. Anna Camner's precise and polished rendering provides the illusion of scientific accuracy; however, upon further consideration the viewer will find curiosities beyond those true to nature. From mutant frogs participating in bizarre warfare, to ants performing cruel rituals on worms; Camner's mysterious and dark narratives nod to science fiction on a very intimate scale. Primarily influenced by medieval art, Camner's exquisite craft combines extremely delicate line work with ethereal three-dimensional rendering, forming a structure of pattern and repetition consistent within her compositions.
Ultimately, The Triumph of Time becomes an exploration into our own human transience. By depicting insects, plants and small animals, Camner is able to dissect, comprehend and illustrate the process of decomposition and decay on a miniature scale. The apparent frailty of these creatures' existence communicates a curious sense of morbidity and mysticism, relating back to our own fascinations and fears about life and death.
Born in 1977, Anna Camner received her MFA from The Royal Academy of Art in Stockholm, Sweden in 2003. Her works are included in a number of prominent private and public collections, such as the Magasin 3 Stockholm Konsthall and The National Art Council, Sweden. Anna Camner lives and works in Stockholm, Sweden.
