Artists in this exhibition: Ulrika Minami Warmling

Stellan Holm Gallery is pleased to present Ulrika Minami Warmling's first New York solo exhibition Les Jardins Noirs. Exhibition opens on Friday, November 2, 2007. Opening reception from 6 to 8 pm.

Warmling's larger than life portraits of friends in full Goth regalia. Inspired by painting tradition of the 1800's, Warmling's ornate portraits reflect Goth subculture. This sub-culture theme is not merely an observation for Warmling; it is part of her own experiences and engagements. The Goth subculture has a distinctive aesthetic in art, literature and music, though styles may vary from Victorian, to punk, to Gothic Lolita. The color black is very prominent in the Goth subculture, and this is evident in Warmling's paintings. The allure of the paintings is the darkness, heightened by the amount of black. Also prevalent in these portraits is the sense of theatricality as seen in their regalia and pose of the portraits.

Born in Uppsala, Sweden, Ulrika Minami Warmling attended Royal University College of Fine Arts, Stockholm. Warmling currently works and lives in Stockholm.
