OPENING THIS FRIDAY
OCTOBER 16, 7 - 9PM

The collaborative team J&J present a special 5-day exhibition

FIVE ALIVE: ON THE BACKS OF ANIMALS
October 13 - 18

Jack the Pelican welcomes the Williamsburg collaborative guerilla art duo J&J. For their exhibition entitled "5 Alive: On the Backs of Animals," J&J have constructed three main sculptures, all revolving around the idea of time and myth: the pentagon table, the gallery garden, and the Trojan horse.

Over the course of 5 days, the exhibition unfolds with a mischievous new chapter every day--culminating on the occasion of this Friday's opening event with their performance of The Fall of Spring, The Rite of Fall, part modern dance, part ceremonial battle with the unruly Trojan horse trying to escape the gallery.

The pentagon table functions much like a calendar cabinet. The 5 paintings inside will be unveiled one each day in succession. The images are culled from memory, based loosely on a conversation that J&J had several weeks ago over coffee with Jack the Pelican.

Together the images create a rough if not convoluted narrative about perception and expectation. Throughout the exhibition, J&J will also be re-potting weeds un-earthed from the abandoned lot next to the gallery. The weeds will be re-potted in construction barricades which will demarcate and obstruct certain portions of the gallery floor.

A SHORT HISTORY OF J&J

1970s Jason Eisner and Jason Balicki are born.
2006 Jason and Jason meet for the first time in a clock radio store. Which is ironic because they both actually looking for black and white ink cartridges.
2006 - 2007 Jason and Jason are compelled by a force bigger than themselves to build a number of similar size minimal rectangular forms together.
2007 Jason and Jason launch NYPIA (New York Parks Installation Assoc.), and install a bench/ planter in a small park in Brooklyn, NY. The bench is situated on Metropolitan Ave. and Roebling in Williamsburg, and is to this day is functioning as it should.
2007 Jason and Jason host the 1 st Annual Sparks Invitational: a one night art opening that they currated and hung outside on a construction fence on the corner of North 5 th and Berry. Patrons to the event were treated to free Sparks, the famously caffeinated malt beverage. Thank you to Miller Brewing Co. for a terrific night.
2008 Jason and Jason declare NYPIA a total success and institute the monogram J&J for all future endeavors together. During this time they also launch Happenis, a cartoon character that appeared to the both of them in dreams.
2009 J&J RARE is established across Europe and the U.S.A.
2009 J&J, while sitting along a rivers-edge, announce that one of its primary goals is to consider the place of art in human life, and to look at how much the art of living is actually recognized as being such in these contemporary times.
2009 The Night School Boat Tour is launched.
June 2009 J&J exhibit "Back & Forth," an unfolding narrative at English Kills in Bushwick

Side Note: J&J put relative importance on the idea that the work is situation specific as well as often being site specific, although it must be said that this is not a formal cliché. The concepts that are developed by J&J are wide varying and far outweigh their attachment to a stylistic form or serial theory.
