Goff + Rosenthal Berlin is pleased to present Plastic Palace, a series of new paintings by Los Angeles-based artist Faris McReynolds.
Painting from film stills extracted from sources of popular culture, McReynolds explores how an image can be broken down through multiple layers of appropriation, from film to video to digital media to paint. Depicting group activities such as party scenes, sun bathing and show-boat performances, McReynolds magnifies the contrast between the immediacy of spectacle and the slow reveal of an event’s details. His imagery lingers in the in-between depicting moments in transition. Relishing this space between cause and effect, McReynolds bestows the mundane activities of a self-congratulating American culture with a sense of seduction, violence, intrigue and suspense.
McReynolds’ brushwork ranges from an expressionist palette-knife impasto to delicate watercolor to bold illustration reflecting a historically diverse range of influences including Warhol, Bacon, the Impressionists and the 1980’s work of Richard Prince. Using a loose narrative style and a seamless melding of assorted techniques, McReynolds immortalizes the minute and fleeting in high saturation and bold contrast of color.
McReynolds states that his work, “comes from the desire to find a balance between something that is staged and intuitive, original and reproduced, familiar and unexpected, digital and analog, comic and tragic…the work explores the grey area between a document and the imagination of a time and place. I’m drawn to moments that exist between genesis and resolve. Something so fleeting and anonymous it’s impossible to see without the aid of technology”.
McReynolds received his BFA from Otis College of Art and Design in Pasadena, California, in 2000. He has exhibited world-wide including a solo exhibition this year at Tim van Laere Gallery in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2006, McReynolds had solo exhibitions at Roberts & Tilton in Los Angeles, Gallery Min Min in Tokyo and Perugi Arte Contemporea in Padua, Italy. Additionally, McReynolds’ work has been featured in Details, Art Papers, Flash Art Magazine, Tema Celeste and Art Week. McReynolds will have a solo exhibition at Goff + Rosenthal, New York in March of 2008.
Goff + Rosenthal Berlin freut sich, Plastik Palace - eine Serie neuer Malerei des Künstlers Faris McReynolds aus Los Angeles zu präsentieren.
McReynolds malt von Filmstandbildern, die er aus der Populärkultur nimmt, und erkundet so, wie ein Bild durch mehrere Ebenen der Vereinnahmung aufgeschlüsselt und zerlegt werden kann: vom Film zu Video zu digitalen Medien zu Malerei. McReynolds stellt Aktivitäten wie Partyszenen, Sonnenbaden und Showboot-Aufführungen dar und vergrößert somit den Kontrast zwischen der Unmittelbarkeit des Spektakels und der langsamen Enthüllung der Einzelheiten eines Ereignisses. Seine Bildsprache verweilt im Dazwischen und zeigt Momente des Übergangs. Reynolds genießt diesen Raum zwischen Ursache und Wirkung und gibt den Alltagsaktivitäten der selbstgefälligen amerikanischen Kultur ein Gefühl von Verführung, Gewalt, Geheimnis und Spannung.
McReynolds’ Farbauftrag reicht von einem expressionistischen Spachtel-Impasto bis hin zu zarten Aquarellen und schwungvoller Illustration, was eine historisch vielfältige Spanne von Einflüssen reflektiert, zu der Warhol, Bacon, die Impressionisten und Richard Princes Arbeiten aus den 1980er Jahren gehören. Mit seinem lose erzählerischen Stil und der nahtlosen Verschmelzung von diversen Techniken verewigt McReynolds das Winzige und Flüchtige mit satten Farben und kräftigen Farbkontrasten.
McReynolds erklärt, dass seine Arbeit „aus dem Wunsch erwächst, ein Gleichgewicht zu finden zwischen etwas, das inszeniert und intuitiv, Original und Kopie, bekannt und unerwartet, digital und analog, komisch und tragisch ist... Die Arbeit erforscht die Grauzone zwischen einem Dokument und der Phantasie einer Zeit und eines Ortes. Ich fühle mich angezogen von Momenten, die sich zwischen Genese und Resolution befinden. Etwas so Flüchtiges und Anonymes, dass man es ohne technische Hilfe nicht sehen kann.“
Im Jahr 2000 schloss McReynolds sein Studium am Otis College of Art and Design in Pasadena, Kalifornien mit einem BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) ab. Er hat bereits international ausgestellt, dieses Jahr beispielsweise hatte er eine Soloausstellung in der Galerie Tim van Laere in Antwerpen, Belgien. 2006 gab es Einzelausstellungen von McReynolds bei Roberts & Tilton in Los Angeles, in der Galerie Min Min in Tokio sowie bei Perugi Arte Contemporea in Padua, Italien. Außerdem wurden seine Arbeiten in Details, Art Papers, Flash Art Magazine, Tema Celeste und Art Week vorgestellt. Im März 2008 zeigt Goff + Rosenthal, New York, McReynolds Arbeiten in einer Einzelausstellung.
