Galerie Stefan Röpke is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by the Spanish artist Eduardo Chillida (1924-2002), on view October 22, 2010 to November 20, 2010.
With works coming from a career that spanned over five decades, this exhibition is a comprehensive, and yet intimate presentation of the lifework of an artist who remained dedicated throughout his life to the constant questioning of sculpture and form with the aim of discovering “Space” itself. The variety of the works presented allows us to observe the singularity of this vision in spite of the diversity of the media he worked with. Early figurative drawings from the 40’s and 50’s, abstract sculptures in terracotta and in iron, rare collages that include tar stained cut-outs, and a gravitation collage of string and paper, are some of the special works that highlight Chillida’s experimental output along side a broad range of drawings and etchings from the different periods of the artist’s long career.
Eduardo Chillida was born in San Sebastian, Spain in 1924, where he lived and worked most of his life until 2002, with a brief sojourn in Paris in 1949. Chillida received his first retrospective in 1966 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston and had solo shows dedicated to his work at the National Museum in Washington DC, the Museo Reina Sofia, and the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao, among many others. He was the recipient of many international prizes in his life including the Sculpture Prize at the 1958 Venice Biennale, the William Lehmbruck Prize, the Prince of Asturias Prize, and the Imperial Prize from the Japan Art Association. His works are found in the collections of many of the most important international museums worldwide, and his monumental sculptures stand in many parts of the world from Spain and Germany to the United States and Japan.

Die Galerie Stefan Röpke freut sich, die zweite Einzelausstellung des spanischen Künstlers Jordi Alcaraz vom 3. September bis 16. Oktober 2010 ankündigen zu können.
In dieser neuen Werkreihe spielt Jordi Alcaraz mit den Dimensionen, unserer Raumwahrnehmung und den Illusionen, die einen speziellen Bezug auf die Literatur und unseren Umgang mit Büchern nimmt. Das Wesentliche der Literatur kann im geschriebenen Wort auf dem Papier gefunden werden. Die Tinte formt Buchstaben, diese das Wort, dieses führt dann weiter zum gesamten Text. Alcaraz konzentriert sich nur auf die materiellen Aspekte des Schreibens, Tinte und Papier, und reduziert die fassbaren Elemente auf ihre künstlerischen und kompositionellen Zwecke. So lässt er eine Verbindung zwischen seinen Arbeiten und der Literatur, die all diese Materialien repräsentieren, entstehen. Sowohl Alcaraz Werk als auch die Literatur vewandeln Bücher, Papier und Tinte in Fenster unserer Vorstellungskraft.
Jordi Alcaraz vewendet weiterhin vertraute Materialien wie Plexiglas, spiegelnde Kugeln und massive Rahmen, die er in kreativer und erfinderischer Weise in seine Kunstwerke umsetzt. So werden auch Licht und Schatten Teil dieser Komposition. Und obwohl die fertigen Arbeiten immer ernst und anspruchsvoll sind, sind sie auch durchzogen von Humor und Witz.
Jordi Alcaraz wurde 1963 in Calella, Spanien geboren und lebt und arbeitet heute in Barcelona. Seine Werke waren in zahlreichen Ausstellungen weltweit vertreten wie dem Museu de Pintura de Sant Pol de Mar in Barcelona oder dem Museu de Sabadell in Barcelona. Die Ausstellung wird von einem ausführlichen Katalog begleitet. Der Künstler ist bei der Vernissage am 3. September 2010 von 18 bis 22 Uhr anwesend.
