Nancy Monk's fifth exhibition at Craig Krull Gallery entitled "Painting Over" will consist of an installation of photographs that are painted over with hundreds of brightly colored dots, dashes, circles and squares that could remind one of Aboriginal art or the gold patterns of Gustav Klimt. Monk is a playfully obsessive artist, whose inventive imagery is characterized by ornamentation and design. Her works usually start with a photograph that serves as point of inspiration for her painting. Working intuitively, she says, "I allow the photographs to tell me what to paint." Monk's installations allow one to witness her process of visual exploration. Her inventions from one artwork split and divide like cells leading to dozens of related branches. Each artwork leads into the next like a visual stream of consciousness and we are able to share her discoveries along the way, with the wonder and curiosity of a child.
