Artists in this exhibition: Yamamoto Masao

Japanese photographer, Yamamoto Masao is recognized for his photographic installations that are typically composed of hundreds of tiny warm toned silver prints adhered directly onto the walls without frames. His imagery reflects a meditative, Zen sensibility and his intuitive groupings of photos give one the impression that they were scattered across the walls like leaves in the wind. As the artist explains, the organic, flowing forms of his installations reveal themselves or take shape like a “haiku moment,” when meaning or insight is suddenly made clear. In his previous three exhibitions at Craig Krull Gallery, Yamamoto was given one of the three gallery spaces to work with. For his current exhibition, the artist is working with the entire gallery. Yamamoto notes that, while his installations create a combined effect, like the layered notes of an orchestra, his recent inclinations are to focus on the individual incident. As he suggests, “A landscape or an incident around me is cut out into a square piece of photograph.” Therefore, the current exhibition will reflect his desire to fluctuate between the rhythms and relationships of the whole, as well as the details of the individual.

In addition to the gallery exhibition, Yamamoto will create an installation of photographs at our booth at Photo L.A. The art fair will be held at the Barker Hangar at the Santa Monica Airport from January 10-13.
