Artists in this exhibition: Peter Rösel

Chung King Project is pleased to presents new works by German artist Peter Rösel. Growing up in Iraq, the artist developed a fascination with desert landscape, particularly the phenomena of mirages. For this exhibition, Peter Rösel travelled to Namibia, where the atmospheric conditions caused by the cold streams of the South Atlantic Ocean, and the dry hot desert produce more optical effects than anywhere else in the world. The results are panoramic landscapes paintings where the artist attempts to capture these ephemeral natural illusions. In an ode to the great tradition of landscape paintings, from the Dutch masters such as Herkules Seghers or Jacob Ruysdael, to the later German Caspar David Friedrich, Peter Rösel re- explore landscape paintings by adding a conscious surrealist touch. The resulting delicate paintings are all tiled by the precise co- ordinates - determined by the use of GPS – of the exact place where the artist was standing allowing a dedicated viewer to follow the artist’s journey through the romantic desolation and expanse of the desert.

In addition, Peter Rösel will also be presenting a sculptural installation.

Peter Rösel is currently a professor at the Kunsthochschule in Berlin. He has widely exhibited in public and private institutions in Europe, and we are very happy to host his first US solo exhibition.
