FlatScreen Talk: Dan Lestander
Thursday 3 March 2011 at 2.30pm

Dan Lestander will discuss his practice with reference to the film Dreams and Wishes, included in the FlatScreen programme.

‘For me the ice is beautiful, where it lies as a membrane between the sky and the sea. The ice reminds me, with its clear involvement in metamorphosis, about life and the constant change that everything is going through. The opening, that a hole in the ice constitutes, provides an opportunity to enter into, or up, to another element. My idea is to utilize the source of this specific space and challenge the experiences of being human.’

Dreams and Wishes is part of a series of video and photo works that are under progress, all with the hole in the ice as a common denominator. Lestander writes, ‘during the project, many friends have ended up in an hole in the ice’.

art:screen is a platform that showcases new and innovative contemporary moving image from Swedish and international artists, in co-operation with a range of international video festivals and art organisers. art:screen also provides programmes for Swedish art institutions and associations that want to broaden their art activities to include video.

art:screen started in 2005 under the name “Art Video Screening”. Art Video Screening initiated and was the lead co-ordinator of Örebro International Videoart Festival 2008 and 2010, in collaboration with art institutions in Örebro. From 2012, art:screen will lead art:screen fest: which invites curators from around the world to contribute moving image programmes to the festival, at the same time hosting an international networking opportunity.

Programmed all the year round with new or seminal work from artists working with moving image, FlatScreen is the digital plane in Canteen Gallery 2 that allows us to move fast and react to new possibilities.

Beaconsfield… is distinguished by its history of providing a forum for extraordinary events and exhibitions, stimulating passionate, candid and robust debate about art’s production and its ideological underpinnings... Sheena Wagstaff, Chief Curator, Tate Modern.
