Le Plan de la ville, ¦uvre récente de Nelson Henricks, est une installation vidéo à deux canaux qui explore les corrélations entre l'architecture et les mots. Entreprise lors d'une résidence de six mois à Rome, cette ¦uvre part d'une conception de la ville comme un environnement textuel, une espèce de bibliothèque nécessitant lecteurs et écrivains. La vidéo présente un mélange complexe de textes et d'images où des objets courants prennent toute la place, croissent et se multiplient, créant de petits univers évanescents que le spectateur peut consommer activement. Le Plan de la ville est inspirée de chapelles et de cathédrales, qui tiennent lieu de représentations tridimensionnelles et immersives de la Bible. Des citations de l'Évangile selon Thomas et de la Bible s'entremêlent à un texte original, à des photographies et à des environnements sonores électroniques. Véritable organisme vivant, la ville est vue comme une accumulation de gestes et de désirs qui vont au-delà de l'existence individuelle.
Nelson Henricks est né à Bow Island, Alberta, et est diplômé du Alberta College of Art and Design (1986). En 1991, il s'est installé à Montréal où il a obtenu un baccalauréat en cinéma de l'Université Concordia (1994). Depuis 1995, il enseigne à l'Université Concordia. Il a également enseigné à l'Université McGill (2001- 2003), à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (1999, 2003) et à l'Université de Toronto (2003). Musicien, écrivain, conservateur et artiste, Henricks est mieux connu pour ses vidéogrammes, qui ont été présentés à travers le monde, entre autres au MoMA, New York, dans le cadre de la série Video Viewpoints (2000). Ses textes ont été publiés dans les revues Fuse, Public et Coil, et dans les anthologies So, To Speak (Éditions Artexte, 1999), Lux (YYZ Press, 2000) et Caught in the Act (YYZ Press, 2004). Henricks a coédité une anthologie de scénarios d'artistes intitulée By the Skin of Their Tongues (YYZ Press, 1997) avec Steve Reinke. Henricks a été récipiendaire du Prix Bell Canada d'art vidéographique (2002) et du "Board of Govenors' Alumni Award of Excellence" du Alberta College of Art and Design (2005).

Nelson Henricks recent work Map of the City, is a two-channel video installation that explores the correlations between architecture and words. Initiated during a six-month residency in Rome, this work sees the city as a text environment, as a kind of library that requires both readers and writers. The video piece is a complex blend of text and images where mundane objects take centre stage, grow and multiply, creating small evanescent worlds for the viewer to actively consume. Map of the City is inspired by chapels and cathedrals, which act as three-dimensional, immersive representations of the Bible. Quotes from The Gospel of Thomas and The Bible are interwoven with original text, still photos and electronic soundscapes. The city is seen an accumulation of gestures and desires that outstrip the life of the individual, upholding the view of the city as a living organism.
Nelson Henricks was born in Bow Island, Alberta and is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art (1986). He moved to Montréal in 1991, where he received a BFA from Concordia University (1994). Since 1995, Henricks is teaching at Concordia University. He has also taught at McGill University (2001- 2003), at Université du Québec à Montréal (1999, 2003), and at the University of Toronto (2003). A musician, writer, curator and artist, Henricks is best known for his videotapes, which have been exhibited worldwide. A focus on his video work was presented at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, as part of the Video Viewpoints series (2000). His writings have been published in Fuse, Public, Coil magazines, and in the anthologies So, To Speak (Editions Artexte, 1999), Lux (YYZ Press, 2000) and Caught in the Act (YYZ Press, 2004). With Steve Reinke, Henricks coedited an anthology of artist's video scripts entitled By the Skin of Their Tongues (YYZ Press, 1997). Henricks was the recipient of the Bell Canada Award in Video Art (2002) and the Board of Govenors' Alumni Award of Excellence from the Alberta College of Art and Design (2005).
