Au coeur du travail de Kelly Richardson, se situe un intérêt pour la création d'espaces contemplatifs qui inspirent des sentiments conflictuels, provoquant à la fois terreur et fascination. Dans ses installations vidéo, l'artiste adopte un langage cinématographique afin d'examiner de plus près la notion d'environnements construits. Selon le philosophe Slavoj Zizek, "30 pourcent de la population mondiale vit dans un univers numérisé, construit de façon artificielle, et de plus en plus éloigné du monde naturel ou traditionnel. À tous les niveaux de notre vie, nous semblons vivre avec des choses privées de leur substance. Nous avons de la bière sans alcool, de la viande sans gras, du café sans caféineŠ et même du sexe sans sexe. Pour moi, la réalité virtuelle représente le climax de ce processus: on nous offre une réalité sans réalitéŠ ou une réalité totalement régularisée.» Longeant la frontière entre fait et fiction, l'installation vidéo Exiles of the Shattered Star consiste en une vue soutenue d'un paysage montagneux, filmé aux petites heures du matin, et dans lequel des bribes enflammées, telles des météorites, dérivent continuellement du ciel, éclaboussant doucement l'eau d'un lac. Évoquant autant une image hypnotique qu'apocalyptique, Exiles of the Shattered Star suggère que le monde pourrait finir en silence, non pas avec un Bang, mais avec un chuchotement.

At the heart of Kelly Richardson's work, lies an interest in creating contemplative spaces, which inspire a series of conflicting sensations, eliciting dread and fascination in equal measure. Her video installations adopt the use of cinematic language to investigate notions of constructed environments and the blurring of the real and the unreal. As philosopher Slavoj Zizek notes, "30 percent of the earth's population live in a digitalized universe that is artificially constructed, manipulated and no longer some natural or traditional one. At all levels of our life we seem to live more and more with the thing deprived of its substance. You get beer without alcohol, meat without fat, coffee without caffeine... and even virtual sex without sex. Virtual reality to me is the climax of this process: you now get reality without reality... or a totally regulated reality." Riding the line between fact and fiction, the video installation Exiles of the Shattered Star consists of a sustained view of a mountain landscape in the early-morning hours, in which flaming nuggets, much like meteorites, steadily drift down from the sky, softly splashing into the water of the lake. Evoking a hypnotic and apocalyptic image, Exiles of the Shattered Star suggests that the world might end in silence, not with a bang but with a whisper.
