1000000mph is delighted to present the first solo London show of the artist Kate Terry.

Kate Terry’s Post-Minimalist installation work is furthered with the production of drawings and do-it-yourself kits. Her thread installations embody a number of contradictory elements, which the artist has balanced out beautifully, proving that she is indeed not only in control of her work, but of the space that hosts it.

Part of the installation process is the observation and dissection of the space itself. As Maurice Merleau-Ponty stated in his book ‘Phenomenology of Perception’, ‘Space is not the setting in which things are arranged, but the means whereby the position of things becomes possible’. Terry takes this notion and makes it her own by seeking out imperfections of the given space, and ultimately making them an integral part of her work.

Her work demonstrates the effectiveness of balance in order to achieve specific aesthetic result. She is mathematically precise with the installation process, yet her materials could be characterized as flimsy, as they come from the world of do-it-yourself and hobby craft.

One could be quick to assume that Terry’s work is very similar to the work of the late Minimalist Fred Sandback. Three dimensional works such as his ‘Ten Vertical Constructions’ are precise and geometric -they could almost be described as ‘masculine’. However, Terry’s precision ends with the application of the pins to the wall. She then guides the threads in order to create an organic, almost fluid installation-threads travel through the space, twist and turn around each other to form an elaborate web-like veil which gradually reveals itself in an elegant and effortless manner.

Admittedly it is a challenge not to touch the installation- touch is a disruptive element in experiencing her work- it devoids it from its fragile and ethereal nature. Instead, Terry invites us to interact with the installation by seeking alternative viewpoints and experiencing it as well as the space from different angles.

Kate Terry is a London based artist ho has exhibited widely in the UK and Canada. Further information can be found at www.kateterry.co.uk
