SHOWTEL is the only independent alternative art event of its kind in Palm Beach County - a one-night only event of site-specific installation art by area artists. This year’s 40 selected artists will transform the hotel’s rooms into conceptual art environments that include performance, sound, video, and projection, while artists installing outside in the tropically lush landscaping will create sculpture that fuse and dialogue with the environment. Curator Kara Walker-Tomé says, “SHOWTEL gives artists from the area an important opportunity to create experimental and conceptual art in a non-traditional setting, unburdened by commercial concerns. This event is my way of contributing to the creation of a vibrant art scene here in Palm Beach County, similar to what I was used to seeing in other metropolitan cities in which I have lived. Any progressive city has a thriving art scene that offers artists a variety of opportunities to show their work, both inside and outside of the context of galleries and museums. SHOWTEL plays a crucial role in the artistic maturation of this rapidly growing county, especially now that Palm Beach Institute of Contemporary Art, which was the only venue in the area to showcase cutting-edge art, has closed.”
A significant development to this year’s show are the new supporters, which now include the Armory Art Center and palmbeach3, in addition to on-going sponsors Hotel Biba, Closer Magazine, Luice Design and TheHoneyComb.com. “Before I joined the Armory Art Center as Director of Program Development almost a year ago, I told them that SHOWTEL came with me. They enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to offer me much needed in-kind support. To me, that demonstrates the Armory’s new commitment to developing contemporary art programs.” Walker-Tomé continues, “And palmbeach3 became a sponsor because they recognize that SHOWTEL is the only event of its kind that showcases contemporary artists from the area and draws a substantial local crowd interested in cutting-edge art.”
The 40 area artists selected for SHOWTEL 2005 are Patricia Anderson, Diane Arrieta, Steve Backhus, James Bové, Amy Broderick, Edward Carr, Wendy Deschene, Christhian Diaz, Franceska Drinkovic, Giannina Dwin, Phillip Estlund, Rebecca Guarda, Tony Girl, Joseph Hale, Walter Hnatysh, Hydra the Sea Serpent, Lauren Jacobson, Kenny 5, Sinisa Kukec, Eydi Lampasona, Gabriel Laszlo, Jeanne Lauziere, Sara Lerner, Bridgette Ludden, Denise Moody-Tackley, Rick Newton, Jerry Opdenaker, Sally Ordile, Dennis Pase, Michael (Pooch) Pucciarelli, Jami Nix Rahn, Hunter Reynolds, Alexander Sanchez, Matthew Sears, Cristina Sierra, Carolyn Sickles, Victoria Skinner, Michael Sobel, Jonathan Stein, and Scott White. Predominantly, the selected artists live in Palm Beach County.
