Bruno PEINADO "Anti clock wise"
In his works, the French artist Bruno PEINADO (born 1970) manages to intertwine the plurality of commonplace objects and symbols with the aesthetic and content of different cultures. The imagery of western pop culture meets the traditions and symbols of a multi-ethnic society, which PEINADO’s multinational upbringing makes him feel akin to. The rigor and static of icons, formed by society, is lifted, destroyed and remixed. PEINADO comments on this as follows: My logic is one of re-combination; the world is a clashing of images. My intension is to destroy purity.“ Following this principal of recombination PEINADO creates a hybrid world, which dismisses western culture. For PEINADO’s debut in Austria, the walls of the gallery Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna will be lined with an intricate semiotic system, as the artist turns the white cube into a projection space, covered with neon writing, logos and labels. PEINADO absorbs the image overload of the 21st century and places it into a new context. For example, the logo of the known German automobile brand is integrated into a dream catcher and thereby charged with mythical meaning. In lieu of the spiders web of PEINADO’s dream catcher, which adorns the mid section of the Native American cult object, appears – very label-like – the word Fame. The western value system with its key words such as fame, success and money is combined with the Native American totem, which is supposed to guarantee a quiet and good night’s sleep. A similar phenomenon is found with another indigenous symbol in the installation „Nouvel Ordre“, in which two eagles cut from painted aluminum attack a turning disco ball. The pretentious glamour life, which is projected by the bling of the ball, is further developed in the socio-critical installation „Speedy Revolution“ – a rotating bag, from which palm trees, the Eiffel Tower, a diamond and smiley face sculptures sprout. PEINADO’s aluminum objects are loaded with symbols of western wealth and reflect the power of the image, which we find ourselves confronted with in the 21st century.
After exhibiting in the Ursula Blickle Foundation, the Kunsthalle St. Gallen, the Palais de Tokyo, as well as in several Biennales (Lyon, S„o Paulo, Istanbul), the works of Bruno PEINADO will, for the first time, be shown to an Austrian audience in the gallery Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna.
Opening: 11. March 2010 Dauer: 11. March – 01. May 2010
SKALL "A Light Beyond Darkness"
For his first solo show in Vienna, the French artist SKALL (born1960) will bestow the gallery Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna with a baroque ambient, by tracking down „The Light Beyond Darkness“ and declaring beauty, vanity and excess to it’s dogma. Accordingly, SKALL’s answers to the question regarding his affinity to the Baroque is: „What is the Baroque? An idea about excess? Then yes, I am a baroque, because life is baroque!“ SKALL, who aside from his pearl, jewelry and treasure studded sculptures, has also dedicated himself to performance art, lives in excess. Consequently, the Latin word excedere (engl. „to step out”) becomes an allegory for the art works of the artist, whose performances and sculptures demonstrate the opulence and the kitsch of the Baroque, as well as it’s exuberance and ambiguity. The sculptures, which were especially created for his show in the gallery Mario Mauroner Contemporary Art Vienna show reminiscences of the works from the Baroque „Kunstkammern“, where not just the worth of the material, but also the worth of the handcraft in itself seem boundless. For SKALL’s large scale sculpture, titled „A Light beyond Darkness“, which also builds the focus of the exhibition, the artist applies symbol-laden pearls – black ones from Tahiti, pink sweet water pearls from China and golden ones from Australia – whose worth alone already sum up to several thousend Euros. Not only the material ennobles the artwork, but also the artist’s numerous hours of labor, which are necessary for it’s production, and so SKALL describes this time, the absurd vanity of the coming into existence, as well as the fragility of the artwork as his „attempt to create an idea of beauty“. Nevertheless, it is not the idea of beauty alone, which SKALL tries to depict – similar to vanity motives it is the ambiguity he aspires to, when he covers a skull with pearls and spiking it with a nimbus of colorful feathers, turning it into a splendid mask. Could death be portrayed any more beautifully than with SKALLS „tacky“ skull? Thereby, it may also not come as a surprise that SKALL allows his artworks to also take on an absurd and humorous quality, by stating – „it’s like a serious joke“.
Many renown collections house the artist’s artworks, for example, the MusÈe d'Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, Paris; the Groninger Museum, Groningen (NL); as well as in the Fnac, La DÈfense, Puteaux; MusÈe de Chateauroux.
son:DA "Last supper"
The artistic tandem son:DA (Metka Golec * 1972 and Miha Horvat *1976) combines audio-visuel experimenting and the study of sound, space, moving images and still pictures. In their work, the artists focus on differnt techniques and media, they work with different materials and use different methods – from digital to analogue processes. One of their prefered media ist he „mouse-computer-drawing“. So, these computer images are created in the photoshop software, where each line is made by hand using the mouse as the interface. Themes of the drawings are fetishized details of modern interior, such as sockets, dirstributors, cables, plug-ins, mobile phone chargers... Allusions are made to paranoid visions of the captured urban person, who is connected with cables to a traumatic social environment of survival. In the picture, „room Nr_1125.psd“, for example, a strange male person with white socks is sitting in front of his super-modern lap-top. Behind this, a huge mountain of cables paralys this idylic scene! The dream of a cable-less communication is at least one million of miles away!
