Ten x Ten: A hundred times more than ever

A group exhibition of The University of Houston Graduate Sculpture Department opens at the Commerce Street Artists’ Warehouse. The show represents the unusually wide range of interests and directions being taken by the current batch of sculpture graduate students, who in turn reflect the growing diversity in today’s art world. It is a sort of “state of the department,” which has been under the direction of Professor Cory Wagner this fall semester. The exhibiting graduate candidates are: Joey Bender, Nancy Douthery, Woody Golden, Dennis Harper, Iskra Ivanova, Robyn Lehmer, Samantha Medellin, Richard Nix, Emily Sloan, and Keijiro Suzuki.

Tenant Gallery
Sweet Nothings
JoAnn Park

The CSAW Tenant Gallery is pleased to present Sweet Nothings, new work by C.H. JoAnn Park. Park’s work is an exploration of girlhood dreams versus the realities of adulthood wherein the principal players are creatures of both the prey and predatory variety. Disappointment,
love, loss, grief, and joy are undercurrent themes in the saccharine paintings that straddle the line between adolescence and adulthood. Raised on Disney fairy tales and John Hughes movies, Park’s work is like a consummate romantic at heart discovering that Prince Charming
may not be that one true love and that happily ever after does not take into account dirty dishes and laundry day. Rooted in childhood fun, but with an eye looking towards domestic bliss, Park’s creatures attempt to negotiate this tumultuous strait between adolescence and adulthood, resulting in works that sit on the cusp of unbridled
happiness and impending doom.

C.H. JoAnn Park lives and works in Houston, Texas, where she shares an apartment with her quite unsociable, though very cute house bunny, Harriet George, and currently attends the University of Houston where she is a BFA candidate in painting. Secretly, she makes and thinks
about sculptures in her studio as well. Park has been in a number of shows, including, Formicide, part of the Westheimer Block Party (2007), Nohegan, Mass Gallery, Austin, TX (2006), Easter: Guerilla-style, Southmore Boulevard Esplanade (2006), This Must Be What Heaven Looks
Like, The Law Office (2006), Landmine Fantasy, CSAW (2005), juried by Wes Heiss. Park is also currently included in the Young Republic event Friendzgiving 2007 at the Joanna Gallery in Houston, Texas.
