Vida Simon & Tedi Tafel (Montréal) Approaching Light

Approaching Light fait partie du projet en développement Approaching Stillness qui s'intéresse au solstice d'été comme à une forme de métaphore enveloppante : c'est le moment où la lumière est à son zénith, où le jour est à son plus long et où le mouvement apparent du soleil s'immobilise, au nord comme au sud : sol (soleil) sistere (se tenir immobile).
Avec ce projet collaboratif, Vida Simon et Tedi Tafel explorent la superposition de projections vidéo, de dessins et de gestes en direct. Leur travail progresse à travers une série de résidences en galerie et de recherche en atelier à divers moments de 2009 et 2010. Vida et Tedi ont débuté leur travail à partir d'une série de questions : les performances pourraient-elles être des événements microcosmiques qui contiendraient tout le cycle créé par l'inclinaison de la terre, passant de l'obscurité à la lumière et de la lumière à l'obscurité? Comment cette recherche articule-t-elle les notions d'expansion et de contraction du temps et de l'espace? Et finalement, quel est le point de rencontre des actions performatives, quotidiennes et rituelles? C'est à l'intérieur de ces questions et suivant ces pistes que les artistes jouent, cherchent et développent leurs idées.
Aujourd'hui, je comprends que l'espace qui m'entoure est vivant et rempli d'imagination, d'émotion, de souvenirs et d'histoire. Je n'ai qu'à y entrer, le laisser me former, me combler.
Le travail de Vida Simon allie le dessin, l'écriture, la fabrication d'objets, le son et les gestes, souvent combinés pour créer des installations et des performances qui répondent au lieu. Une passion pour le dessin lie tous les aspects de sa pratique; c'est la forme qui exprime le plus directement son intérêt pour le conte visuel, la matérialité et la corporéité. Elle a présenté son travail dans plusieurs lieux au Canada et sur la scène internationale dont, tout récemment, le Chili et la Lithuanie.
L'artiste montréalaise Tedi Tafel possède une formation en cinéma et en danse. Elle présente son travail dans des lieux non traditionnels et explore les possibilités expressives du corps en contact direct avec des espaces ruraux, urbains et sauvages. Elle s'intéresse aux couches d'expériences situées juste sous la surface de nos manières habituelles de bouger et à la façon dont notre monde intérieur est inspiré et transformé par les lieux que nous habitons.

Approaching Light is part of Approaching Stillness, an in-progress project looking at the Summer Solstice as a kind of enveloping metaphor - the moment in time when the light is at its maximum, the day is at its longest and the apparent movement of the sun, north or south, comes to a standstill: sol (sun) sistere (to stand still).
This collaborative project by Vida Simon and Tedi Tafel explores the layering of video projection, live drawing and gesture. Their process entails a combination of in-gallery residencies and studio research at punctuated moments in 2009 and 2010. Vida and Tedi began with a series of questions: could the performances be microcosmic events encapsulating the entire cycle of dark to light to dark, created by the tilting of the earth? How does this inquiry play into notions of expanding and collapsing time and space? And finally, what is the intersection of performative, everyday and ritual actions? These questions are used as points of departure for the artists as they play, research and articulate.
Today I understood that the space around me is alive and full of imagination, emotion, memory, story. I merely have to enter its form, let it shape me, let it fill me up.
Vida Simon's work incorporates drawing, writing, hand-made objects, sound, and gesture, often combined to create site-responsive installations and performances. Linking all aspects of her practice is a passion for drawing, a form that most directly expresses her interests in visual storytelling, materiality, and embodiment. She has presented her work in a wide range of contexts across Canada, and internationally - most recently in Chile and Lithuania.
Montreal artist Tedi Tafel has a background in film and dance. Her work takes place in non-traditional venues and looks at the expressive possibilities of the body when in direct contact with rural, urban and wilderness spaces. She is interested in the layers of experience that exist just beneath the surface of our habitual ways of moving about; how our interior world is inspired and transformed by the places we inhabit.
