Sophie Littlewood

| Biography

All fingers and no thumbs
Sophie Littlewood's practice resides within a sculptural context. She alters the usual identity and meaning of consumerist stuff through the process of aggregation. Uncanny, anthropomorphic apparatus are the result of this, which attempt to question and express notions linked to the human condition.

Within the stages of making, the work evolves enabling a sense of artificial procreation to unfold. Through the intertwining of disparate, domestic materials such as gardening equipment, newspaper and textile, hybridity occurs. Consequently, the objects metamorphose into absurd appearing assemblages with an intention to simultaneously invade and interact in space.

The employment of colour invites a playful connotation to project into the work. The surreal like shapes and forms of the objects further enhance this playfulness as well as emphasizing dysfunction. From this notion, the viewer is encouraged to actively participate with the work.

In response to the overall accumulation of objects, a theatrical environment is revealed, which embraces painterly and informal sensibilities.
