In the Elastic Time montage series, Dalal examines autobiographical and architectural sites in India. He depicts the exquisite geometric order of domes, arches, spaces, and intricate ornamentation of a 15th century fort in Bidar, near the city of Hyderabad. He tethers the direct textbook-style architectural views to more spontaneous, snapshot-like images made recently. In visiting Bidar, he questions his narrow attitude as a young architecture student of the 1980's, when pre-modern sites like the fort at Bidar hardly interested him, preoccupied as he was by modern architecture.

He exhibited in New York recently at Orchard, the International Center of Photography, and the New York Public Library, and at TART in San Francisco and at Gallery 42 at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C. He is currently exhibiting at the Miami-Dade County Public Library. Last year he received the Tierney Grant for emerging photographers. Dalal teaches at the International Center of Photography.

Snapshots with friends taken 25 years ago in a Mumbai neighborhood called Malabar Hill recall a magnetic friendship and a nonchalant sexuality that Dalal was unable to address then. Through these montages he revisit that time. The record sleeves motif underscores the primary importance of music in their lives: albums were handled like precious cargo, borrowed, taped, played for friends, and returned carefully – a currency all its own.
