Hotwater, oil, 19 x 12in, 2007
My work for the last several years, has been involved with the representation of the outside world from an interior point of view.

The paintings are done on site, in a single sitting. The approach is rapid and employs relatively complex subjects as an impetus for a particular type of painting response. The work is as much about the medium and an interest in exploring it’s vitality as I am that of the subject.
“Realism” is an endlessly vague term over which I favor “nonfiction”. I see my work as existing in a line that runs from Altdorfer to Constable, through Ruskin to Edwin Dickinson, further informed by a modernist understanding that all painting is inherently abstract. The work displays an appreciation for the expressive potential of the natural world and it’s use as an effective vehicle for universal human issues. Within the closeup views of foliage and moving water there is a manifestation of the infinite.
