In this project entitled MIGRATION, I am documenting the move of a married couple from Red Hook, Brooklyn to Felton, California.

In November, 2005, I photographed their past dwelling as it was transformed from being fully lived in to completely empty. In December 2005, two weeks after the couple’s arrival, I traveled to Felton (which is 15 minutes outside of Santa Cruz) to start photographing the reverse process: the unpacking and settling of their new life within a drastically different environment. Since that first visit, I have photographed the changes taken place in March 2006 and December 2006. I plan to make another journey in the summer of 2007, and will continue to do so until the series is fully realized.

The surrounding neighborhoods are also being taken into consideration and investigated as I seek to compare these two coastal areas. Various questions are posed through this undertaking. What does quality of life mean? What do our surroundings tell about us? What material items do we cherish and take with us and what goes by the wayside? The photographs juxtapose the couples past East Coast dwelling against their newfound West Coast home and its surroundings and reflect the lives they create for themselves.
