I work in series, which variously reflect my interest in social dynamics. Most of the imagery submitted addresses the impact of commercial media representations of women.
My appropriation and replication of their contours reflects the shaping of personal narratives/identities forged from ubiquitous, media manufactured archetypes. The cult of the individual has become one of emulation, leading, in various degrees, to a post-feminist re-embrace of our own objectification.
The "Appearances" paintings simulate the worldly beauty/ power of historic Eastern deity icons such as Buddhist images of Bodhisattvas-charged with guiding souls to spiritual perfection- and in these works links it to the visual supremacy of media ‘goddesses’. My tracings and manipulated fusions of these perfected bodies and my resultant distortions are intended to resonate with the troubling consequences of identities built on commercial desire.
"Temple Construction" is a category of works that includes groups of paintings, "Turning to Stone" and "Freeze". The imagery and titles reference the hierarchy of power and devotion that the beauty industry inspires. The dimensions of the works, Turning to Stone, resonate with those required for a career in modeling- and depicts fashion figures totemically, as deity icons in a temple frieze, ‘biblically’ turning to stone in contemplation of ‘high end’, ‘must have.’ accessories.
In the "Traffic" series, I use the neutrality of sign figuration to fashion a codex, to map less visible dynamics of the social landscape- here the intersection of beauty and desire, the media, and human trafficking.
