Untitled 2006 8 x 10
In the current body of work I isolate body parts such as the hands and back to examine aspects of human existence including renewal, loss, frailty, strength, pleasure and pain. Whereas the hand images emphasize the expressive nature of hands and their ability to touch, explore and manipulate the outside world, the images depicting the back use its tableau of skin as a surface to reveal and transcribe the body’s inner structures, thoughts and conditions. The inclusion of X-ray images in some of the pieces further exposes the body’s inner state and adds a disquieting reminder of the body’s mortality.

How do the body, mind and spirit connect? Are we simply flesh and blood or do we extend beyond our corporeal limits?

Rather than seek definitive answers to the questions I have posed, I am compelled by the sense of mystery surrounding them. In this puzzling realm between reason and intuition, between what can be proven and the unknown I present a body that resonates with possibilities. These possibilities encourage further reflection, suggest additional questions and most importantly allow mystery to flourish.
