Between the lines (Bumper cars)

Natalie Dowse is interested in blending the boundaries between high and low culture, compounding familiar features of mass appeal with those of considered value. She draws influence from snapshot photographs, the internet, printed media and images taken from the television screen to make paintings. Therefore giving this imagery an elevated status by drawing on the (historical) eminence of what painting stands for.

Her work examines notions of documentation and associated memory. The images used can be arbitrary or specific, her own or borrowed, untouched or spliced together to make a fictional scenarios. By using secondary sources, she can take ownership of the image and ‘steal’ any experience; suggesting narratives and memories whether real or artificially constructed. The spectators' personal response and connection to this imagery intrigue her, culturally evoking common experiences and constructed memory.

Dowse is interested in forcing the arbitrary towards the specific and vice versa, whereby the resultant paintings transpose the original meaning of the image whilst retaining its underlying form.
All images oil on canvas.
