I use hip-hop culture as a catalyst to approach race and stereotypes within the broader element of American culture. In using elements of hip-hop culture, and experiences from within, I address issues surrounding race, and stereotyping that exist, whether conscious or not, as well as authenticity within said context. I present to the audience artwork, which gathers meaning from, and is meant to challenge presupposed notions. As a viewer you are asked to confront your beliefs regarding racial relations, which are a macrocosm of the divisions existent in hip-hop, and therefore creating uneasiness that may be based on the work itself, or at the same time, the viewers own reception of the work.
