Feral
My series "Darkening" reveals nighttime worlds otherwise undetected. In this work, I build on photography’s historic relationship with making the unseen visible and allude to notions of capture, evidence, and voyeurism inherent in the medium. Darkening was shot using a camera trap, an automated device that employs an infrared sensor to detect the presence of an animal and then triggers the camera’s shutter. My project combines this stealth technology with a gothic sensibility. Many images reveal some uncanny tableau: glowing eyes piercing the blackness, a glimpse of a feral woman haunting the forest, or a unexplained spectral light. Through these enigmatic photographs, boundaries shift, blurring the line between human and animal, fact and fiction. Like images from a vivid dream, my photographs document a poignant convergence of nature and the psyche.
